FEN CIN G 2003 has been a very exciting Year for fencing at Brisbane Girls Grammar School with a record number of approximately sixty new and experienced fencers signing up at the beginning of the season. This brought a wealth of new talent and enthusiasm to the squad. For the second Year the squad had the luxury of two coaches. This has made the training sessions much more valuable, as it allowed the group to be separated into different ability levels. One result of this has been the retention of higher numbers through the Year with about thirty girls still regularly participating into Term IV Our fencers have enjoyed learning new skills as well as participating in a range of state and national competitions. Highlights for the Year included the victories of the Brisbane Girls Grammar School teams in the
Year 8 and Junior A divisions of the BGS invitation al Fixtures. The Junior A team, consisting of Anna Brocklebank, Iemima Cowderoy, Hilary Martin and Rosemary Pyatt have been together for three years and their first place this Year was a cumulation of their consistent effort over that time The trip to the National competition held in Sydney in July was the largest contingent (11 girls and 2 coachesI ever to represent the School and the girls gained valuable experience against some very tough opposition Appreciation must go to the coaches, the co- ordinator, Mrs P. Vize, and all the fencers for another very successful Year of Grammar Fencing Julia Harrison
