With each new Year come more challenges, opportunities and progress for Brisbane Girls Grammar School. The School community has risen to these challenges, taken advantage of the opportunities and made the progress which is intrinsic to the School's excellence. Making all of this possible have been the School's strengths of diversity, flexibility, confidence and supportive ness for each other This ear undoubtedl , has been one of great changes, far-reaching strides and laudable achievements. Girls Grain in a r's academic excellence, athletic superiority and creative distinction have been up held through the Year's many triumphs. The most memorable event for the sporting community was undoubtedly the Cross Country team's winning effort, as they led the School to its tenth aGSSSA championship. The drama community had its success too with performances of Hamlet and more specifically, The House of Bernardo Alba. With countless awards a n d natio nal recog nition, G re in in a r's academic reputation now stands higher before. Brisbane Girls tha n ever Grammar School has shown it can rise above the rest, and be with the best Coming to live in Australia was the introduction to my life story, but Girls Grammar has become its own chapter I'm positive that this too applies to the entire Grammar community,

which reaches into and touches all of our lives. This School, whether the students realise it or not, bestows upon each and every pupil knowledge and spirit so that their lives may be lived to the fullest Every Grammar girl should take pride in who they are and who they will become They should also realise that they are part of a community that is truly wonderful. The following ninetieth annual Grammar Ma azine is a dedication to the trium hs memories and spirit which are omnipresent in the Grammar community. Presented is a perspective of the stunning Year just past, with emphasis on how great community continues to be ou r

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

The Brisbane Girls Grammar School Magazine has a long history of recording enrolments and tabling annual achievements by students across the academic, co- curricular, coinmu nity and social spectrum. However, there is much more contained in these bound volumes than mere archival information and documentation. The pages of our magazine resonate with the life and spirit of this great School through its images and words. The emotions of our girls are captured in a way that portrays the essence of what our School values most highly: active involvement, friendship, enjoyment and effort. These are the important qualities to be highlighted and recorded in a publication that has the primary purpose of representing the student body's Year in review. The Year 125 have reflected these sentiments in their 2003 theme: Be in in Led by the Head Girls, they have promoted the ideas of community, challenge, change and connections. What commendable goals to have and what marvellous success they have had! Lauren Harrison and Jessica Rothnie must be congratulated on their personal drive to activate these ideas and I thank them warmly for their leadership and support this Year. Together with their peers they have recognised the need to work together and they will leave behind them innumerable concrete and intangible legacies marking their special initiatives and impact upon the life and history of the School. This is a place where initiative is applauded. This is not a School about conformity or rigidity in expectation or outcomes. Rather we encourage our girls to invent imaginative solutions to complex problems and to approach new challenges with enthusiasm and zeal. How else can we as educators expect these Young women to effect considered contribution and improvement in the world? Given the calibre and confidence of Year 12 as they approach their future beyond Girls Grammar, I am secure in the knowledge that

FROM THE HEAD

GIRLS

What has made 2003 different from al other years? Early in the Year the Student Executive recognised the strong sense of community that exists in the School and at the first Executive meeting made the decision to build on this feeling and kick off their campaign with the theme for the Year: "Be in it" The aim was for girls and the community to 'be in' music, sport, art, drama and the many activities available at the School and in doing so make 2003 a memorable Year. The student body embraced the theme and it was

wonderful to see the enthusiasm of the students and the rest of the Grammar community, demonstrated by their participation in and support for the various activities. it was this participation which produced a strong positive feeling and a sense of excitement reinforced by the many successes of Grammar teams and individuals this Year The Executive and Year 125 wanted to reach out to strengthen contact with the surrounding local community as well, so the 'Big Project' was activated again this Year to raise funds for the Royal Children's Hospital. Our School's Executive met with their counterparts at Brisbane Grammar School and discussed possibilities for future interaction between the two schools in Years to come. in Term I, we held a fundraising debate between the BOYS and Girls Grammar Schools, with proceeds going to the hospital Open Night proved to be not only an occasion for the students and their families, but one for friends, future Grammar girls, and the local Spring Hill community. The Year 2003 was also one of change and the School community accepted that challenge by changing some long-standing practices. This proved very successful as evidenced by the large attendance on Open Night, the very special and moving Concert in St Stephens Cathedral and the enjoyable and professionalIy presented Music Gala in Term 111. it is the co-operation between staff, students, parents and members of the wider community which makes change possible and as a result of these experiences, the girls have proved they are able to welcome and accept new challenges As successful as this Year has been, we realise that it could not have been possible without the endless efforts of Mrs MCConaghy, Mr Dale, Mr Addison and Mr Seaha, who did not hesitate to push Year 125 to their full potential, and of course Mrs Bell, whose continuous presence and advice carried us through our final Year at Brisbane Girls Grammar School. A special thanks must also go out to all the staff and parents for their support and guidance this Year. This has been a Year of fun, high spirits, and hard work. But most of all. it has been a year that has truly encapsulated a sense of together ness. From sport to music, from debating to drama, the 2003 Year 125 have left the School knowing they have made a contribution to the Girls Grammar community that will remain for years to come.

A new addition to the School's leadership team in 2003 was the re-introduction of the office of Prefect. We are essentially the School's pu blic representatives, with an emphasis on promoting good citizenship and displaying the characteristics of sound academic performance, good in a n ners, wearing the uniform with pride and community awareness. Prefect activities included welcoming guests to the opening of the new Science building, Alumni re-union tours, parent evenings and special tasks during the course of Open Day. The title of Prefect was a wonderful gift from the School and was awarded to thirteen Year 12 students who have actively portrayed traits that the Grammar community wishes to promote. The role is still an evolving one, with Prefects meeting and forming ideas throughout the year. Whilst a diverse group, the Prefects have aimed to represent both Year 12 and the whole of the student community's ideals to the best of their ability.

swimming pool but also in the stands with great cheering urging fellow House members on to third place overall. Our charismatic Beanlanders took their skills to the stage to perform a wonderful rendition of Roald Dahl's The Witches. it was a delightful performance that was well received by the audience, with Beanland claiming a gold placing for the second Year in a row. Brittany SUIlivan and A1ice Waithall must be congratulated on their dedicated directing, as must the many Beanland drama queens who made up the cast. Ice blocks cooled our athletes down after running the 2003 Cross Country course Once again Beanland's involvement was commendable with all grades boasting high participation levels. it was a fun afternoon where girls could run, skip or walk their way to the finishing line whilst making a valuable contribution to Beanland's tally Congratulations must go to Sarah Wilson in Year 8 for her star performance, winning her age group. The event that highlighted our Beanland calendar was our clean sweep of the trophies at the Athletics Carnival. This fantastic achievement would not have been possible without the excellent organisational skills of our Sports Captains, Lisa Weatherstone and Rachael Wilkinson The participation was marvellous and all girls should be congratulated on their House spirit. Our Year BS shone. with runners including Sarah Wilson and Katherine McCulloch blitzing the track. Sarah must be cong ratulated on her record-brea king time in the 100 metres as should Matilda Gunn for her five-Year winning streak in the high jump arena with both girls winning their

for the girls and contributed greatly to our overall points. Everyone's involvement made the day a success and whether it be the hurdles or the relay races, Beanland's presence was strongly felt. The Beanland stand at the School's Open Day was very successful and displayed the spirit of Beanland girls. Pink fairy floss was seen bobbing in amongst the crowds of people and chocolate bars were in surplus at the Beanland Lob-A-Choc. The Choir Captains. Jenny Coates and Lisa Parry, are to be coinmended for leading Beanland in an exceptional performance of I Bel^^ve I Con Fly in Term IV. it is certain that every Beanland girl has shown her utmost support for the House in 2003. Spirit, participation, dedication, leadership, fun and enjoyment have all been qualities evident in Beanlanders across all Year levels. On behalf of the House we would also like to extend thanks to the wonderful House Group teachers for their ongoing support. Thank you also to Miss Nardi on behalf of Year 12 Beanland for providing us with cake and laughter on days when exams and stress were looming. A special Beanland thank You must go to wonderful Mrs Chakravorty. Her tireless efforts, dedication, meticulous organisation, guidance and support are an asset to the House. The Year 125 particularly thank Mrs Chakravorty for the special role she has played throughout our five years at high school and for instilling the Beanland spirit within us A big thank You must go to the Year 125 themselves: the House Seniors, Sports Captains, Drama Captains and Choir Captains who have helped make the House run so smoothly. We are thrilled with the amount of enthusiasm and commitment Beanland girls have shown in 2003 and this has also been reflected in our successful results. Thank You to all the Beanland girls who have made our last Year at Grammar so special. We have been proud to lead such a spirited House and extend our best wishes to the

Amazing spirit, success, fun and vitality have been the recipe for the wonderful Year Beanland has enjoyed in 2003. From the pink streaks that dominated the athletics carnival to the wonderful drama performance, Beanianders have shown how remarkable they really are The Year started with introductions to our new Year BS, who have really made their mark on Beanland House, with their effervescent personalities and their impressive athletic ability. Early in the term we set spirits flying high with our annual House Party. As in the past, this Year's party was an afternoon filled with food. games, fun, plenty of pink and of course the Miss Beanland Competition. it was certainly a good chance for Beanianders of allgrades to join together and have a fun time Our Year 85 demonstrated star quality when they won the Inter house Volleyball Competition. They worked well together and whilst having a good time were also very successful - the first Year 8 group from Beanland to win the competition ever! In March, Beanland spirit hit the swimming pool with a wonderful show of involvement and enthusiasm from all girls. There was great participation shown by the girls who freestyled, backstroked and breaststroked their way down the 50-metre pool at Chandler. Not only did Beanland show great spirit in the

respective age group championship. This was a wonderful achievement

EN GLAND THE CULTURE

Displaying mainly England's blue back to the other Houses, England finished overall third on the day. During second Term, England House held a Talent Quest which gave the timid girls opportunity to an shine. With spirited performances by all, the Year 115 won the House Group breakfast for their rendition of Uptown Girl by Billy Joel. After a busy first semester the girls

from each House Group joined five other girls from different House Groups at each Year level, to participate in what was called, 'Mixed Roll Calll This was designed to Initiate bonds among the different grades to ultimately create a more cohesive House. it is hoped that these initiatives can be continued next Year There is no doubt that this Year would not have been as successful as it was without the support of Ms Forster, the House Group Teachers and of course all the girls within the House A1yce Frew House Captain

.^I. . - ,^ \

England House has always been an enthusiastic and caring House and this year was certainly no exception. The Year started with the wonderful House Party, where all the girls, decked in blue, had a flying time. There were competitions, karaoke and COPIOUS amounts of cake. Of course, there was the annual Miss England Competition, which this year was won by the Year lis. The Inter house events calendar was full of wonderful occasions, starting with the inter house Swimming Carnival. There is no doubt that the girls swam their hardest, cheered on by their fellow Eagles until they were blue in the face. They competed strongly and did their best for the entire day. We had a number of outstanding performances from numerous girls in the House and the most spirited House Group on the day was the enthusiastic Year BS. As a result of the very challenging day for the Eagles against tough competition from other Houses, England House finished equal fourth With no time to spare, the girls were out of the pool and onto the stage, performing a fantastic play called So Much To Tell You. Due to the hard work and dedication shown by the two Drama Captains, Holly Millman and Kathryn Millhouse, along with the commitment illustrated by the wonderful cast and crew, the play was a raging success, resulting in a well-deserved Silver Award. After all the acclamations and standing ovations for their performance, the girls were out of the dressing rooms and onto the Cross Country track. The gruelling two kilometre run, race or walk was a challenge for some but not so for our awesome runners, namely JOYce Leung, Elisiva Caesar and Penny Boulton. With these incredible runners England House managed a fantastic second place to Gibson House. in hot pursuit of the Purple Phantoms, later in the year, England House performed tirelessly in the inter house Athletics Competition

indulged in n u merous breakfasts with different England House Groups in the last week of School Of course, a predominant event within the House is the annual fundraiser. England House has been an active participant in raising funds for Zoe's Place, an institution that provides assistance to families with children who have life limiting illnesses This Year England House raised over two hundred dollars through a cake and hot chocolate stall held during third Term, adding to the resources that Zoe's Place can provide for a very worthy cause. The girls were able to learn much more about Zoe's Place before the fundraiser when representative came to speak at a House Assembly. The enthusiasm shown by each girl through their donations certainly showed he generosity of all t e girls in England House A new initiative by the current Year 12 a organised

of England House was the introduction of the monthly award of Eagle of the Month. This award was created to recognise the girls within England House who have been noticed by their House Group Captains as a fellow Eagle who has in some way positively contributed to create a more cohesive and supportive House In addition to this new initiative, was an occasional change in the organisation of Roll Call. A few times throughout the year approximately five girls

Caitlin Wilson led amazing cast In ou r -=' production of a re-vamped anderello. Laura Craig and Anna Mullins, our very own Cinderella and Prince Charming, did exceptionally well in the lead roles and as a result of our combined efforts, Griffith was presented with a Silver award for the performance All of the cast and crew of the production are to be sincerely thanked for making this Year's Inter house Drama one of the best Yet, and for sharing so many laughs along the way We could not survive for long without our regular dose of House activities, so following the Inter house Drama was the Inter house Swimming Carnival. Grimth girls were just enjoying themselves so much, that winning or losing became a trivial pursuit! Our Year 115 took the cake, however, with the 16 Years Age Champion and two runner-up positions all going to Griffith Year lis: Nikki Cheales. Mirenda Smart and Kate Leitch respectively. Our other big Term 111 event was Open Day. Griffith House excelled with its Beautiful Blooms stall. Special mention must go to the Year lis for the dedication and commitment they showed throughout the day which continued well into the evening. It looked beautiful and was great fun As the Year comes to an end we would like to thank Ms O'SUIlivan for her dedication and contribution as Head of Grimth House this Year, and Ms Bolton, acting Head of House since Term 111, for her tireless efforts In organising and caring for all Grimth girls. On behalf of each Year level, thank You to all of the House Group teachers, Ms Nisbett, Mrs Parkinson, Mr Thomas, Mr Wheatley and Mrs Geraghty for providing us all with everyday support and assistance, and a friendly face in the morning Lastly, thank You Griffith girls - the most amazing bunch in the School. in no other environment other than the one we have here at Girls Grammar, will we ever find ourselves in the company of so many outsta riding, friendly, fu n and vivacious young women as can be found in Grimth House. I wish You all best of luck for the Years to come and thank you for so many fond memories

performed well, placing fifth overall, with special mention going to Cara and Joanna Moore for their fantastic performances. On this particular day, Grimth supporters took to the stands of Chandler, stamping and clapping (with great co- ordination I to the sounds of our infamous war-cry: Grimth Redbacks Rock You, blowing the rest of the School away with our talent and our extraordinary capacity to cheer and be heard anywhere within a ten kilometre radius Victoria Park was_where the mob of red came together again as a formidable force for the Inter house Cross Country. With such a large number of girls with an exceptional ability to move their legs very very fast, we placed fifth overall in the competition, with many a girl crossing the finish line looking rosy-red in true Griffith style. Rachel Ferris deserves a special mention for her outstanding performance on the day With all the Inter house events for Term I completed, Term 11 became rather dry in terms of House activities, and so to compensate, Griffith held its own party: the Year 8.9 and 12 Bash. it was a great success, with lots of food Iquid pro quo) and some very interesting dancing. it was also an enjoyable bonding experience for these grades, especially our attempts at joint skipping over a tug-of-war rope. Only one jump was ever completed! With the approach of Term 111 and the inter house Athletics Day, every grade was preparing for their last opportunity to yell and scream, and run andjump and throw, in the name of Griffith House. Though we only placed sixth overall, it is a known fact that

Looking through ou r windows, we watch yet another incredible Year go by. We sit and wonder just how long it will be until we can, once more, put on that repugnantly intense red frock we found at the back of mum's "do-not-open" cupboard, cover ourselves in red war-paint, and run around in outrageous red tutus as if it were the most normal thing in the world Here in Griffith. that's what we do. There must be-something about red that~bring out the best in people, because this year, Griffith girls have outdone themselves in terms of House spirit, participation, performance and having plenty of good, clean fun. Right from day one we could tell our new Year 85 were going to be a great asset to the House, and they proved this by showing their true colours (of red that isI at our House Party, organized by the Year 125 The House Party included various fun activities such as a game of pass-the-parcel - a game which we may never outgrow - and the judging of the annual Miss Redback Competition, in which each grade has a chance to show their talent for - well, anything. To enable the Year 125 to hold onto their last shreds of dignity - due to never once having won the Miss Redback competition in their entire school life they were awarded the tremendous honour of being dubbed Miss Redback winners for 2003, based partly on talent, but mostly on sympathy from the judges The next House event to follow our party was the Inter house Drama Competition. Our two drama captains, Courtney Einerson and rose-colou red

Carnival. The day was a great success with strong individual performances from our top swimmers. The war cries were exceptional, led by our Spirit Captain, Hayley Webb Our next challenge was the Interhouse Cross Country where all tigers, young and old were prepared to make their mark on the two kilometre loop around Victoria Park. Once again everyone arrived dressed in orange from head to toe. The afternoon was filled with shouting, running, walking and even skipping. Hirschfeld's charge was led by our very own Sports Captain and School Cross Country Captain, Sarah Lind who ran brilliantly in the 17 Years age division The next event on the calendar was the Inter house Drama Festival held towards the end of Term I. Our fantastic drama captains Zoe Briggs and Jessica O'Connor produced an Inspiring performance of Away which earned a Silver Certificate. This was a great team effort and huge fun for our Year 8s who played the fairies in the excerpt from A Midsummer Night!s Dream. After a busy Term I, Hirschfeld House spent Term 11 relaxing and taking the opportunity to enjoy many House breakfasts in the barbecue area. The Hirschfeld spirit rose again in inid-August for the Inter house Athletics Competition. It was pleasing to see everyone having a go regardless of their athletic ability. Individual performances by our athletics stars were outstanding. it was a very successful day where all who were dressed in orange cheered, ran, lumped and threw to the best of their ability it has been said that fundraising is what Hirschfeld does best. And in 2003, this certainly proved to be the ca se. Traditionally. our best effort in Hirschfeld fundraising is the Hot Potato stall run by the Year 115 at the Brisbane Girls Grammar School Open Day. This Year was our most successful in Hot Potato history with the fantastic Year lis raising an Impressive $2,238 and selling out before the night was over! Thanks must go to the wonderful parent helpers and to the girls for their outstanding organisation. Well done everyone! Another tradition of Hirschfeld's fundraising is the Save the Children badges, sold by our Year 125 under the direction of Sarah Murdoch. The badges, featuring various boys and girls, were very popular this Year with over 100 badges sold. All money raised from Hirschfeld's efforts this Year will go to the Save the Children organisation The voices and music capabilities of our Hirschfeld girls are another attribute of the House. Our Music Captains Mei-Hung Lin

and Chloe Cooper have led the House through a successful inter house Choir Competition with the song Jeremiah was a Bullfrog. With everyone taking part, the rehearsals during House Time, mornings and lunchtimes have been a most enjoyable bonding experience. Our thanks must go to Chloe and Mei-Hung for their dedication, hard work and expertise in successfully leading the House as Music Captains As 2003 comes to an end and the Year 125 are ready to embark upon life after school, there are many special people who deserve sincere thanks. Firstly an enormous thank you must go to Mrs Stubbing ton, who with her exceptional leadership, impeccable organisation and caring nature saw 2003 at Hirschfeld House run with ease. Secondly we must thank all the House Group teachers, Mrs Vize, Ms Partenan, Ms Martel, Mrs Seckold and Mr Allinson for their continued support. Fabiene and I would also like to thank our Sports Captains Sarah Lind and Elizabeth Hughes for their support this Year. Lastly we would like to thank all Hirschfeld girls for making 2003 such an enjoyable and memorable Year

:!^!..

2003 is one to mark in the diary as an exceptional year in the life of any Hirschfeldian. The enthusiasm, talent and skill for which Hirschfeld is renowned emerged once again in late January, with everyone eager for the challenges that lay ahead. in the minds of Year 12 Hirschfeld, 2003 was to be bigger, better and even more orange than previous years The first and very important task was to help our new Year 8 Hirschfeldians settle in It was wonderful to see them on their first day with immaculate uniforms and faces mixed with expressions of fear, excitement and confusion. We met our new tigers, had lunch with them and took them on a tour, showing them how to read their timetables and find their way around. The indomitable spirit so predominant in Hirschfeld, emerged from within our other Year groups as well to welcome and assist the Year 85 in managing their life at a new school. The first event on the calendar was the annual House Party held in the first few weeks of school. Many outrageous costumes were paraded, while the dining room was decorated with orange streamers and balloons. This time around, all House Groups had to incorporate an orange sock into their noticeboard and prizes were awarded for the most creative and unique use of the sock. The Year 85 had obviously settled well into Hirschfeld by now, producing a clothesline their on noticeboard featuring the sock inscribed with 'Wear the PowerI This was obviously the winning design. A fantastic war cry was performed by the Year 9s who took out the ever-crazy and tightly contested Miss Hirschfeld title. Pizza, cake, cordial and plenty of fun was had by all Late February saw the Chandler Aquatic Centre become inundated with everything orange for the inter house Swimming
