HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION THE APPEAL AND THE CHALLENGE OF THE NEW \ ru, " g, I

The Health, Physical Education and Sport Faculty continues to expose students to new experiences and challenges. This School is exceptionally enlightened in providing Health and Physical Education to girls as a compulsory subject from Years 8 to 11. This allows the opportunity for students to have physical activity as a regular and accepted school component of their norma programme, and to be introduced to a range of traditional as well as new sports and activities. Not only does this policy enhance the sporting programme, it also ensures that student interest and involvement 15 maintained by variety and challenge 2003 saw the introduction of a new sport In the Year 9 Core Programme: European Handball. The selection of this sport was based on the transferability of skills students would already have acquired from sports such as netball and basketball. it was felt that. although the students would be learning a new sport, many would have sufficient existing skills to enjoy this challenging activity. To provide the best learning experience, the School was fortunate enough to utilise the expertise of this sport's State Development Officer, overseas guest players and two current Australian representatives. Lilly Maher and 01ivia Doherty it has long been the philosophy of the Faculty to provide students with the most expert teaching possible. This has resulted in the students being taught by staff with specific knowledge in an activity, as well as invited experts enhancing the programme. Both the Touch (Year 101 and European Handball (Year 9) units exemplify this principle. Not only are our students exposed to this expertise knowledge, but also our staff, who can adapt and integrate ideas into their classes European Handball was scheduled at various times during the Year to link with theoretical units including Sociology, Biomechanics and Fitness where students could use the current sport being played in class to illustrate. explore and evaluate a range of movement principles and concepts The staff members of this faculty aim to stimulate, motivate and challenge each student to a greater understanding of her abilities and broaden her physical and sporting experiences and challenges Mrs P Harvey-Short Director of Health, Physical Education and Sport
