1985 School Magazine

Ballgames 1985 Captain: Tania Hudson.

BALLGAMES The 1985 Ballgames season was definitely a " whole new ballgame" compared to the previous season, in terms of coaching and training. This year we started our training well in advance of the competition, with the Year 8 Team starting their " hard slog" in March , and the other grades in April. Early mornings and hard work became routine, and despite mishaps such as sprained ankles and muddy ground, the team worked its way towards the 18th May with great enthusiasm. This year, rather than one coach coaching the entire squad, we had more specialised coaching, with Miss Hatton training the Year 10, 11 and 12 teams, Miss Patton training the Year 9 team (the famous " Hatton-Patton Combination" as they were to become) and myself coaching the Year 8 team. The trainings, though often hard and repetitive, really were lots of fun - made even more so by, on occa·sion, playing with imaginary balls, when the sole key to the ball box was not at school! The Q.G .S.S.S.A. Ballgames Carnival was held at St Hilda's School , Southport, on the 18th May and proved to be a very exciting day. Throughout the majority of the competition, we were coming a very pleasing 2nd to the virtually unbeatable St Hilda's Team. Unfortunately however, we were just overtaken by State High in the last 15 minutes of competition. However, our 3rd placing, on 194 points, just 3 points behind State High's 197, and 95 behind St Hilda's 289, was a very pleasing effort, as it was an improvement- on last yea r. Our most successful team was the 14 Years Team, who gained one 1st place in Tunnel and Zig in record time, two 83

2nds, one 4th, one 5th, and one 7th , contributing a total of 46 points to our score. The other four teams between them acquired a total of six 3rds, three 2nds and one 1st. It is reassuring and encouraging to note the immense talent we have coming up through the school in the younger grades. Finally, I must take this opportunity to thank our excellent coaches, Miss Hatton and Miss Patton. It was through their bountiful knowledge, time, effort and care that they put into the training and preparation, that we gained the satisfying success we did. It was good to see Miss Hatton make a comeback to Ballgames coaching and she really did a superb job. Thank you also to Mrs Harvey-Short, for her undying support and guidance throughout the season . Congratulations to the Team and thanks so much for making the season such an enjoyable one, both for yourselves and for me. Let's make 1986 the year to WIN!
