From the Archives Centre Some people think of the School Archives in the library as a place for things dead and gone, but the Brisbane Girls Grammar Archives are very much alive. in the process of day-to-day management of this facility, three wonderful Items have come across the Archivist desk this year. All have been donated to the School by families of past pupils. These gifts are all important in creating a sense of identity and tradition In the School - they document the decisions, capture the experiences and support the memories of past students

relate to Gwen's experiences: her obvious. loveof the. School and her friends. and her participation in many sports - tennis, swimming, athletics, ballgames and even rugby The girls managed to play these sports despite their large bloomers and thick black stockings I Beatrice Monteath's physiology book The beautiful and intricate drawings in this book reflect a different era when all diagrams

Sophia Beanland's watch Miss Beanland was Lady Principal of the School from 1882 to 1888, and this

engraved gold and diamond watch was a gift from the School on her departure in 1913, Sophia sent the watch to Margaret "Maggie" Kerr, an outstanding student who in 1883 was the very first pupil to win the Lady

and illustrations were hand-drawn by students' There were no photocopies or scanned images. These painstakingly precise drawings might make us think about the way in which students processed complex ideas nearly 100 years ago. I wonder how students will look at the work completed by the 2011 students in another 100 years?

Lilley Gold Medal. in the accompanying letter Miss Beanland says that she hopes that it "may be a pleasant reminder to you of your school days" Gwen Spurgin's photo album This item turned up recently in a box of bits and pieces. Gwen Spurgin attended the School from 1919 to 1924 Looking through this precious photo album is a window into the life of a school girl ninety years ago, and gives a real sense of the longevity of the School. Spring Hill Young Writers workshop

in the Easter holidays eight Year 8 girls were chosen to take part in the Spring Hill Young Writers workshop. Isabel Backstrom (8R), Fotini Box (8G), Alexa dria Brown (8G), EmmaCockburn (8M),_Julia Frew-(8L), Tasfia Hossain (8M), Anna MCArthur-Dowty (8R) and 011via Scott (80) participated in the four day workshop with students from All Hallows' School, St Joseph's

College and Brisbane Grammar School The students worked with teachers and author Brian Falkner to produce their own creative story. Brian Falkner 15 an award- winning, best-selling author of several novels for children and young adults During the workshop the students were spilt up into groups of four and allocated a scenario to further develop the perspective of their character. At the conclusion of the workshop the students' works were presented to parents, and some students gave their personal reflections of their experiences

I enjoyed the workshop because it was a great experience to work with a fantastic author and share ideas with other students at different schools in Year 8.1 got lots of great tips and they have helped, and will help my writing in the future. FOTiNi Box (BC)
