. Making connections and hitting the target - The Quest
On Wednesday I I August, 200 Year 8 girls headed to Brisbane Grammar and thirty boys headed to Girls Grammar to participate in The Quest. Nobody knew what to expect before entering the 'construction zone' where the challenge was explained. This year The Quest involved designing and building a payload drop device with an electro-magnet on the end of the rotating arm which, when two wires were pulled apart, dropped a load. Theoretically, It would fall into one of three different target cylinders. in eight construction sites across the two schools, students collaborated in inter-school groups to demonstrate which was the champion team. Points were allocated not only for hitting the target but for three-dimensional thinking, plan and logo design, group
efficiency and team work. The strengths of individual boys and girls in the team shone through as students became project managers, quality controllers, chief engineers, communications designers and construction engineers, maximising the use of their team's skills. By lunchtime on Thursday most groups had developed and tested their devices, with varying success I The students commented on how much they had enjoyed working as a team to design and create something that really worked

My buddy doesn't really need help with any school work but I try to meet with her anyway just to double check there isn't anything she's having trouble with at Grammar in general and I've managed to give her a bit of advice on things. MARGARET MCCARTHY (11R)

^
^,
Studg Buddies Study Buddies was a new initiative to Girls Grammar this year. The Year I I girls met with their Year 8 partners to help them with their study routine and settling into life at Girls Grammar. Through this programme many girls form relationships which they would be unable to without these sessions. The Year 11 girls met with the Year 8 girls weekly to help with any homework they have or any trouble with assessment The programme aims for the older girls to be not just a tutor but a role model for the younger girls. This year's programme has been great for all participants and created a basis for the programme to continue next year
