During the afternoon drinks and ice cream were sold by members of the committee and a Bring and Buy Stall was convened by Mrs. Lettice. Unfortunately very few Old Girls "bought" anything to sell and if it had not been for the gener- osity of parents in supplying so much food for aften1oon tea, we would not have been able to make a profit. During the afternoon a raffle of two pairs of nylon stock- ings was conducted and the lucky winner was Kay Seccombe ,. a 1955 debutante. The profit for the Kathleen M. Lilley Library amounted to £18/1/G. Grammar Ball Cloudland was once again the venue of this year's com- bined Grammar Ball held on Friday, May 27th, at 8.30 p.m. This year the executive ball committee were pleased to wel- come Sir Raymond Huish and Lady Huish as our guests of honour, who kindly consented to receive our debutantes . These girls, very efficiently trained by l\Irs. T. G. Bain and Barbara Lansbury, were presented by Mrs. H. Marshall, wife of the President of the O.B.A. , in the role of matron-of-honour. Our thanks go to these people for the nay they trained and guided the girls through their presentation. The 1955 debutantes were : Enid Hagen, Wendy Carew, Noelene Cooley, Marilyn MacCarthy, Gabrielle Rowe, Margaret Southerden, Patricia Woolford, Dell Ralph, Yvonne Fullerton,. Betty Hams, Kay Seccombe, Heather Huntington, June Reid, Jessie Brockett, Delphine Grindley, Shirl ey Lwis, Claire Wood- ley, Shirley Norris, Ailsa Hinton, Ann Greenwood. Each g·irl received a small crystal vase as a memento of the occasion, and during the official supper, the debutantes' cake, in the shape of the school badge, was cut by Lady Huish. Our Assc·ciation thanks the combined Ball Committee with secretaries Barry Seale and Fay Muir for their labours. Althou gh we consider the ball was a success socially, it was not so financially successful as in previous years. An official pre-ball party was given by the President of the O.B.A. and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. H. Marshall, at Fairview, at which representatives of both Associations wer e able to meet their guests of honour and official guests. This helped towards a very happy evening. Arrangements fc·r m.xt year's Ball are already well in hand. Novelty Dance This dance was held at the Victoria Park Refectol'v on Saturday, June 4th, at 8 p.m. A suh-conunittee unde r Diane 42

Hume-Cook organised the dance. It was not as successful as your Executive Committee would have liked it to have been as it fell during University vacation. The Kathleen M. Lilley Library benefited by £10. Originally this dance should have been held on Friday, 1\!Iay 6th, but owing to a double booking by the Union Counci l ·of the University your sub-committee withdrtw their booking, .nnd were re-imbursed for portion of their expenses incurred. Most of the young people present appeared to enjoy them- selves and many competitions were held during the evening. Our thanks go to the sub-committee, Marcia Thomas, April Wood and Judith White under Diane's leadership. September Dance A sub-committee comprising Jan vVacker, Judith Payne, Marcia Thomas, Diane Hume-Cook, Jill Malouf and headed by Maureen 0 'Connell convened an informal dance at the 'fennis Club Houst. (Milton) on :B"'riday, September 23rd, at 8 p.m. This was a social and financial success and in all about 250 people attended and £30/14/8 was given to the Kathleen M. Lilley Library I!'und. Soft drinks were sold during the evening and a raffle :appeared to be quite profitable. A very generous supper was provided by the dance and ·executive committee of the O.G.A. and everyone enjoyed dancing to Maisie's band. Your Committee are hoping to have several of these dances ·during the coming year, so please help us by attending in force. The Committee wishes to thank all for helping to make it :a success. KATHLEEN M. LILLEY LIBRARY Members will be very pleased to read of the progress your Committee has made towards the building of a Library. The first letter to the Trustees requesting permission to build a library within the school grounds was written on July 20th, 1954. This was followed by investigations as to site. In February, 1955, a sub-committee of two , your President, Mrs. Hal Gehrmann, and Secretary, Miss Joan Beech, were appointed to meet t he Trustees, at their pleasure, to discuss JlOSition and buildings. This meeting took place on \¥ ednes- .day, March 29th, and the site suggested by lVIr. Colin Trapp, 43
