Health & Physical Education Health and Physical Education (HPE) is a compulsory subject from Year 7 to Year 11. Across the five years, students explore a range of theory and physical performance units, including nutrition, biomechanics, lifesaving, touch and aerobics. Here, students from a range of year levels discuss their experiences in HPE. YEAR 7
We found that high school HPE is very different from primary school. We have been able to participate in many challenging activities. Also, unlike primary school, we did weekly theory lessons. We learned about our bodies, how to take care of them, the changes that they are going through and what food we need to eat to be healthy. We are sure that many of us have used our skills and techniques learned in HPE in everyday life such as interschool and club sport, hanging out with friends, and when making decisions about the food we eat. This year in HPE we have enjoyed participating in swimming and lifesaving. It was great way to start Year 7 as we were able to learn while being able to cool off and have fun exercising in summer. Term II athletics was fun and challenging because it required many different skills, and we learned new events that we had not studied in primary school, such as hurdles. In Term III we developed our ball skills and played a range of modified ball games. These games were great because we learned to work as a team while working on ball skills. It also allowed us to develop an understanding of Indigenous culture through a range of traditional games. In Term IV we participated in gymnastics, exploring a range of apparatus in both rhythmic and artistic gymnastics.
YEAR 8
In the theory component, we worked individually and in groups when completing assessment tasks. All of the topics covered this year, including body mechanics and anatomy, and teenage well-being, are not only useful in the classroom but also fundamental to everyday life. Overall, Year 8 HPE has been an
In HPE this year, not only have I learned to step out of my comfort zone and challenge myself but I have also broadened my knowledge on a variety of engaging health topics. In the physical component of the subject, we were introduced to wide range of new and interesting sports as well as further developing our swimming and lifesaving skills. One of my favourite aspects of HPE this year was the European Handball unit as it was an unfamiliar yet engaging team sport that everybody in the class enjoyed.
