YEAR 7 HUMANITIES Humanities

In the second Semester, we started our geography units. Firstly, we created a Wix website promoting our suburb or local area based on the concept of liveability. This was particularly fun as we got to accomplish field work: taking photos and observing local facilities. Humanities is a great subject to learn at Girls Grammar. It is history and geography rolled into one and it has given us an opportunity to learn more about our School, the past and the world around us. It has certainly been an amazing year of Humanities and I am definitely looking forward to another great year to follow. MADELEINE KHOO (7E)

Year 7 Humanities was one of the new subjects we started learning this year. Humanities is a subject exploring both History and Geography in the span of one year. This year, we have studied the history of Brisbane Girls Grammar School, Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius, Ancient Societies, our local area and ‘Water in the World’. At the beginning of the school year, we learned about the School’s past and how it evolved into what it is today. This certainly helped us to settle into the school and become immersed in the School’s culture and spirit. We then studied Mount Vesuvius and how it impacted Pompeii and its inhabitants. Deepening our knowledge of human history, we completed an assignment on our chosen Ancient Society, becoming a part of the ‘Flux Capacitor Time Travel Agency’ and advertising a trip back in time! This year in Humanities we have covered many different topics. In Term I we explored medieval history and the differences between life as a peasant and as a noble. We examined the feudal system and the manors on which peasants, tenants and tenants-in-chief lived. We also focused on the importance of the Church and religious wars known as the Crusades. In Term II we explored sustainability in urban environments. We looked at sustainability factors, including environment, quality of life and resilience. For our assessment task we chose a recent sustainability project implemented in a major city and evaluated in what ways this project made the city more sustainable. In Term III we began looking at the Renaissance. Initially we looked the spread of the Renaissance in Italy, as well as Italy’s finest artists and inventors. We looked especially into the city of Florence. We had an incursion in which we visited Renaissance Florence in our imagination. We were provided with maps, pictures and information that we used to try to understand the culture and historical importance of the city. We then moved on to our assessment task in which we chose one of a list of significant

Renaissance figures. We spent many weeks researching our individual to be able to put together a timeline of their life and to write about one of their biggest achievements from their point of view. We focused on our individual’s historical significance, trying to find out why we now see them as a very influential Renaissance figure. As the term finished we revisited Leonardo da Vinci in more depth, looking at his unique painting style and his magnificent machines. We got to play with a model of his catapult and build our own models of his tank and flying machine. LATA WARNER (8R)
