Design & Technology
YEAR 7 DESIGN This year in Design Technology we used the design process to create innovative solutions and used an extensive range of technology tools. Not only were the Year 7s taught about how to correctly — and safely — use equipment, but we were then given multiple opportunities to test and improve our skills through the form of assessment pieces. Of course, our teacher was beside us every step of the way, commending us on our achievements while also pointing out the things we need to improve on. This made technology design an extremely exciting class as we were constantly doing new things. Overall, it was a fantastic experience which I am sure everyone enjoyed. EMMA-ROSE NEIL (7M)
YEAR 8 DIGITAL There are many roles digital technologies play in our lives. Technology allows people to access and share information through websites, apps and social media software which also helps connect people. Tools accessed through technologies also makes peoples’ jobs easier by allowing designs to be more accurate, and coding allows technology to complete more repetitive tasks. During a short period of time I learned the logic of coding and programming. I then applied this knowledge to creating my own website and programming a robot to perform certain tasks. Building a website included a nice combination of design thinking and scripting of the page elements. The coding provided a very clear structure while the design is all up to an individual’s creativity. The more creative you are, the more software boundaries you push. TARA BASHIRZADEH (8R) YEAR 8 DESIGN The Design Technologies course at Brisbane Girls Grammar School has been fantastic. It has unveiled so many new experiences and given me the opportunity to learn new skills and work with spectacular equipment. Working with design concepts was an interesting experience and taught my peers and I a new way of thinking. The CO 2 dragster design and development was an exciting experience that came with many successes and challenges. When things didn’t work out, you had to think about it from another perspective and approach it from another angle and a new thought process. The team work was interesting because when personalities clash and ideas a different you had to compromise which was difficult but definitely worthwhile. In Semester 2 we advanced our skills in computational thinking activities such as making flowcharts and algorithms to control various systems such as boom gates and pedestrian crossings. We used the software application -Flowol which explored a different mindset for me that I had not experienced before. My confidence has been boosted after learning about these new technologies this year as I know if I persevere at something, I can succeed. I look forward to more prospective challenges next year. YEAR 7 DIGITAL In Digital Technologies we designed and developed packaging for a mini-LED lighting system. We used Adobe Creative Cloud applications to edit bitmap and vector images. We gathered a variety of photos related to our chosen theme. These included logos, superhero photos, text, barcodes, branding and prints. These images were then edited and placed together to create the packaging. I really enjoyed this assignment, as I learned so much about image manipulation and designing. The skills my classmates and I have learned, have been helpful with graphic design for our other subjects. Now we can simply choose any image and edit it to suit us. I look forward to more projects that teach us lifelong. ALLEGRA ZAUNBRECHER PINCERATO (7W)
