MATHS A YEAR 11 The things we have learned so far this year in class — statistics, finance, construction, data collection, and probability — have provided us with the fundamentals in real life maths for our endeavours in the real world. Throughout this subject we have bonded with our teachers and fellow students during interesting in-class discussions. Maths A has been tremendously enjoyable throughout the year and we all cannot wait to keep learning. We look forward to maths everyday and are we are always eager to learn new things about the world in Maths A. MIRANDA SPENCER (11B) AND SARAH PYM (11W) MATHS B YEAR 11 Studying Maths B in Year 11 gave us all a much greater insight into the world of mathematics than we have explored in the junior years. Maths B teaches us a very large variety of content, from practising fairly routine, simple equations to unfamiliar problems that require creativity and a deeper understanding of the basic knowledge learned. The problems we students are faced with can be linked to life- related solutions to abstract questions. There are three criteria that students are assessed on in Maths B. Knowledge and Procedures are when the student is expected to recall and apply the mathematical definitions, rules and procedures, which are generally applied through numerical equations and involve technology. Modelling and Problem Solving involves using synthesis of information learnt to solve problems presented to us, investigating the validity of arguments and identifying any assumptions and effects of the answers to the question. Communication and Justification assesses the student on their use of mathematical reasoning to solve problems and how they communicate this, as well as a justification of the reasonableness of their answers. Studying Maths B in Year 11 has caused me to think about mathematics in a new perspective and to gain a greater insight into how abstract knowledge about maths can relate to life situations. HELENA GANDHI (11O) MATHS C YEAR 11 Well, well, well where to start? This was a question we constantly asked ourselves while staring aimlessly at the enigma that is question ten of every exam. We learned everything from the daily uses of matrices to moderating arguments between imaginary numbers, not to mention finding the infinite sum of geometric and arithmetic sequences. As complex and ‘intimidating’ as these concepts might sound, Year 11 Maths C has been the most rewarding learning experience yet. We have learned to think in a new dimension. Delving into the proofs behind common mathematical theories has also enriched our understanding across other subjects. Along with this new subject came new assessment components. We received our first Maths C assignment which taught us how to approach large complex problems with new technology like GeoGebra. The extra time given for the assignment meant we could develop our understanding to a discerning extent. We have thoroughly enjoyed this year as Maths C students and look forward to exploring more concepts in Year 12. GRETA HOPSICK (11B) AND AIMEE BOULTON (11E)
