2017 School Magazine

SOFTBALL The Brisbane Girls Grammar School 2016/2017 Softball season was full of success, with the junior teams competing during Term IV of 2016 and the senior season taking place on Saturday mornings in Term I of 2017. All the girls demonstrated determination and commitment, showing their Girls Grammar spirit and forging new friendships, making this season yet another outstanding one for everyone involved. All players should be congratulated on a wonderful season of intense training and challenging matches. With nine teams competing, Brisbane Girls Grammar School came away with two premierships: 8A — who were undefeated — and the Senior B team that lost only one game during the season. Additionally, six out of the nine teams placed in the top five, which is truly commendable. This season could not have been as successful as it was without the invaluable contribution of our coaches, and we would like to thank all involved for helping the girls achieve these remarkable results. Thanks must also go to our score keepers, Mrs Harvey- Short, Mrs Cooke, Ms Bernard and Ms Fukushima. We are particularly grateful to our dedicated Co-ordinator, Ms Bailey, whose hard work kept our girls passionate and prepared for each and every game. Finally, we must also acknowledge our softball parents for their constant support throughout the season and their commitment to the softball programme here at Brisbane Girls Grammar School. We are very fortunate to have been a part of Brisbane Girls Grammar School Softball for the past five years, and are even more so to have been captains of such an amazing team this year. We are exceptionally proud of our girls, and look forward to seeing the legacy of successful and competitive Girls Grammar Softball continue for many years to come. SWIMMING

This year was another successful year for Swimming at Brisbane Girls Grammar School. The swimmers dove head first into the year with the three-day swimming camp in the last week of the Christmas holidays. The camp was a great chance for everyone to not only develop their skills in the pool, but also get to know their fellow ‘gogsintogs’. This season was considerably shorter than usual, but there was still a solid five weeks to prepare for QGSSSA on Wednesday 1 March. This year, we introduced the swimming motto as ‘gogsintogs’ and it was fantastic to see the whole School embrace this idea and incorporate it into their cheers. This motto united the swimmers as a team, and encouraged every ‘girl of Grammar’ to help support her swimming sisters. There were five chances for the team to get their racing togs on at the Friday night carnivals and Interhouse Swimming. All meets were filled with records and teeth-breaking swims and it was great to see everybody enjoying themselves. The sportsmanship, enthusiasm and positivity that we witnessed at Interhouse Swimming was truly amazing. Congratulations to Griffith House, who came away with the Lilley Interhouse Swimming Cup this year. In the final and most exciting race of the day, the 50m freestyle championship final, we saw an amazing showcase of the depth of our swimming talent. A repeat of last year’s final saw both first and second place swimmers swimming under the record time, with Eliza King (11E) narrowly coming out on top. Congratulations to Eliza for being named Overall School Swimming Champion for the second year in a row. QGSSSA was an incredible night of swimming, with personal bests and QG records being broken across all ages. Fuelled by the vocal support of over 250 blue-faced girls, the ‘gogsintogs’ managed to swim their way into fourth position. We are both extremely proud of the performances of all girls on the night, and hope that the ‘gogsintogs’ continue swimming their hearts out in years to come. Thank you to Swimming Co-ordinator, Ms Martel, Head Coach and four-time English Olympian, Suki Brownsdon, along with all the past student coaches who helped us lead a fantastic team of girls to success. We both feel excited knowing that when we pass the leadership of the ‘gogsintogs’ to the 2018 captains — the Swimming program will be in capable hands.
