RYTHMIC GYMNASTICS

ROWING

The 2017 Rhythmic Gymnastics season has been one for the record books! Our gymnasts leapt into the season with trials in early Term II. Following trials, a squad of eighty-four girls were chosen to make up our Year 7, B Grade, A Grade and Open teams. After three months of early mornings, practice performances at Open Day and countless additional training sessions, the QGSSSA competition finally arrived. With glitter hairspray applied and apparatus in hand, our gymnasts were ready! Each of our dedicated and talented gymnasts performed at an exceptional level. To quote our Year 7 Team 1, they ‘slayed’ Division 1 by taking our first place. Congratulations girls, this is an outstanding feat. Year 7 Team 2 placed second in Division 2, and Teams 3 and 4 placed third and first respectively in Division 3. For the vast majority of our Year 7 gymnasts this was their first experience of Rhythmic Gymnastics. We would therefore like to congratulate them on these admirable results. Similarly, we are extremely proud of our B Grade, A Grade and Open teams. Our B Grade teams finished fourth overall. Our A grade teams certainly brought their A Game and executed polished routines, finishing second by only 0.15 to Moreton Bay College. Finally, our Open Pairs and Open Group finished in third place. Being captains this season was an honour that neither of us is likely to forget. At the beginning of the season we sought to create a cohesive team and to place fourth or above in all divisions. These goals were not just met, but exceeded. We must thank every girl on the team for their efforts and commitment to Rhythmic Gymnastics this season and for making our final season so special. We are grateful to have been able to lead you this year and wish you every success for the 2018 season. INAIS BLACK (12H) AND EMILY HAWKINS (12W) CAPTAINS

The 2017 season of Rowing saw a culmination of fantastic results from Head of the River, unbreakable bonds between crewmates and a definite culture of unity in the Brisbane Girls Grammar School shed. Rowing demands a high degree of strength, dedication and passion. This season the Girls Grammar rowers demonstrated their capabilities to excel in this wonderful sport, whether that be through regatta results, personal best times or outstanding spirit displayed on Head of the River day. The commencement of our season saw a ‘learn to row’ workshop and water safety course for all the new Year 8s interested in trying out rowing. It has been a pleasure to experience the development of the Year 8 squad. Their hard work lead to an outstanding result at Head of the River with seven out of eight podium finishes. Over the June-July holidays, the rowers were training hard and for long hours at our annual week-long rowing camp held on the beautiful Maroochydore waters. In their downtime the girls took part in several workshops covering topics that included nutrition, recovery and water safety. Overall the camp was a fantastic experience for the girls to further develop their technique and fitness, and strengthen relationships. Our motto for the 2017 season was ‘Bold in Blue, We Pull Through’. Reflecting on the 2017 season, it is clear the girls demonstrated the very essence of this motto: unity. On regatta days, the Girls Grammar rowing squad was a force to be reckoned with, as the girls always brought an infectious amount of energy and spirit. Our Head Coach and Co-ordinator, Mrs Sallie Callie, played an integral role in the success and running of this season. We cannot thank her enough for the passion and dedication she gives to rowing at this School as well as her experience as a world champion rower. It has been a pleasure to captain the squad this year. We are so proud of the girls for the improvements they have made this season, and we cannot wait to see what next season brings for Brisbane Girls Grammar School Rowing.
