of their ability and twenty-two girls were selected to represent Met North at the State Carnival. On Friday 20 October, the athletics team accompanied by members of the Student Council and Year 10 students set out to QGSSA Athletics Competition. Brisbane Girls Grammar School had an amazing day with ninety-four athletics girls competing to attack the track and shield the field. The girls displayed this motto with a temporary tattoo on their shoulder blade, showing their continuous spirit. Particularly, Girls Grammar athletes set exceptional records on the day, Elizabeth Moss in the 15-years High jump and Dominique Hourigan in the 12-years Division B Shot Put. Congratulations and well done to these girls, this is an amazing achievement. The 2017 athletics squad was coached by Mrs Dabelstein, Ms Mann, Matt Lynch, Donna Miller, Benita Willis, Lilly Gibson- Dougall, Scout Cooke, Erica Schmelzer, Josephine Auer, Harriet Gleed, Lachlan Caldwell, Yevgeniy Tkachenko and William White. We would like to thank all of our coaches for their endless words of encouragement and tips to improve our techniques. Finally, the greatest thank you of them all is to our Co-ordinator, Ms Greenland, who has helped immensely in paving the way for us as captains to display enthusiasm, passion and fun throughout the whole season. She is tremendously hardworking, determined and has helped every girl in the team to attack the track and shield the field. Throughout the 2017 Athletics season, friendships were made, cookies were eaten and every single girl showed talent, sportsmanship, persistence, commitment and perseverance. Thank you for making our job as captains an easy one and we wish the team good luck for the future. POLLY MCKEVITT (12M) AND KATE MORRISON (12H) CAPTAINS

Badminton is the second most popular sport in the world, and has been an Olympic sport since 1992. In 2006, Mr Greatorex introduced this sport to Brisbane Girls Grammar School and ever since, it has been the fastest growing sport at the School. This year the season started with more than 180 girls from all Year levels signing up. Trials were held in the first week of Term III, and squad members trained three hours a week, with extra training sessions in the lead up to competitions. Over the semester, they learnt communication skills, teamwork and sportsmanship all the while improving their skills and physical wellbeing. This year, 122 girls took to the courts over two weekends. The seniors and the Year 10s competed on Saturday 14 October and the juniors competed on Saturday 28 October in the QGSSSA competitions. This year has been our most successful year to date and we proudly display our six winning pennants in the school gym. Wins for Senior A, B, C, D, 8B and 8C and three very close second places to the Open team, 9A and 8A teams. Badminton is a pressure-driven, fast-paced and unbelievably fun sport in which our girls have gained a deeper understanding of the sport. It has been a pleasure to lead such an enthusiastic, supportive The Athletics season started in Term II, Week 7 with the girls attending preseason training at School. We had loads of girls from all Year levels showing immense enthusiasm and determination. The afternoons consisted of drills, stretching and fitness with our strength and conditioning coach, Zoe. Our motto: ‘Attack the track and Shield the field’, was shaped around the aim that our team was going to be strong and united. ‘Attack the track’ represented the runners attacking the track with all their speed and force. ‘Shield the field’ represented the field athletes who would jump high or long, or throw far in order to dominate the field and work together with the track athletes. The girls achieved this motto throughout intense training sessions, at Friday meets and especially on QGSSSA day. The highlights of the season included the athletics holiday camp, Friday meets and QGSSSA day. The athletics camp consisted of the athletics squad with girls where we participated in training, swimming and fitness to help prepare us for QGSSA. Friday night meets were a perfect way of watching the girls improve and break personal bests. Another highlight of the season was the forty athletics girls who competed at Met North Trials. Every girl competed with determination and strength, representing the school to the best
