ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS

The 2017 Artistic Gymnastics season wrapped up at the fifty-second QGSSSA competition held at Clayfield College on Wednesday 29 March. The atmosphere was heightened by many girls’ excitement — including a very high number of Grammar girls outnumbering other school — ready to compete with enthusiasm and eagerness. We would like to thank the entire team for their support on the day. Almost all of the sixty-eight girls who represented the School on the day were at the venue from 7.00 am to 7.00 pm. Considering that the A Grade and Open teams don’t compete until 4.00 pm, we, along with the other girls competing at that time are extremely grateful and proud of the support that the whole team was able to give to these girls. The level of competition was extremely high and the scores we incredibly close throughout the day. Each routine that is performed by our gymnasts is scored out of a possible ten. Each tiny deduction can make a huge difference and we, as a team, worked very hard to minimise these deductions on the day. In some cases, the overall final placing was determined by less than one tenth of a point! The fourteen weeks of training most definitely paid off; we are so proud to be able to present our results to the whole School. Overall, Brisbane Girls Grammar School won a total of four premierships, out of a possible seven. With seven schools competing in Artistic Gymnastics, we certainly were the dominant school on the day. Complete results • Year 7 team 4 14th, team 3 12th, team 2 10th and team 1 8th • D grade division 1, 1st • D grade division 2, team 2 2nd and team 3 1st

The reason Girls Grammar athletes continue to excel in an increasingly wide range of sports is not just because of their dedication, perseverance and determination. It is because when the whole School supports them, they are able to achieve things that they never thought possible. That is why, this year, we introduced the motto All Blue, All In . Uniting each team with their passion for sport, not only with a mission to dominate on the court, diamond, field or the pool, but to take it further — to dominate with support and school spirit. Every girl who represents Brisbane Girls Grammar School is a part of ‘The Blue’ and every girl who is a part of ‘The Blue’ shares in a journey full of passion and pride. Our rich sporting culture is shaped by the unwavering spirit demonstrated by every single Grammar girl, regardless of whether they are competing or supporting. This year in sport, we have seen incredible performances from individual athletes, inspiring displays of teamwork and tenacity, and we have seen the agony of defeat and the celebration of victory. Throughout it all, we have felt an incredible School spirit. The Year 12 cohort set an outstanding example when more than 200 attended Queensland Girls Secondary Schools Sports Association (QGSSSA) swimming, setting the tone for the year ahead. The QGSSSA winter fixtures — comprising tennis, hockey, volleyball and netball — was the most successful season with Girls Grammar taking out fifteen of the thirty-two pennants on offer across the four sports, which was more than any other school. Also special this year was the celebration of 100 Years of the Sports Brooch. To think that Girls Grammar has been formally recognising its sportswomen for 100 years is absolutely incredible. The rich history of the sports brooch clearly demonstrates the solid foundations of the sporting culture that we experience today. At the Sportwomen of Excellence Celebration, thirteen former Sports Brooch winners joined us to celebrate the past, present and future of this award. They are an inspiring group of women and it was an honour to host their return to the School. Since our first ever trial and team selection together back in Term I of Year 8, we have been so inspired by the amazing sporting culture of this School. Thank you everyone for the support that you have given us this year as captains. We hope that during our five years, and this year in particular, we have had an impact on Brisbane Girls Grammar School sport, even if it is a fraction of the size of the impact that it has had on us. Hopefully we leave having demonstrated this year exactly what it means to be All Blue, All In . We would like to thank Director of Sport, Ms Northcroft, the co-ordinators of all eighteen sports, coaches and —most importantly the girls — for embracing our motto and vision this year as well as for making our five years of representing the School so enjoyable. ABI ASHFORD (12G) AND MADISON SATYASIV (12M)

We are so proud of all the girls who competed, everyone did an amazing job. Our thanks goes to our Co-ordinator, Mrs Kregenbrink, for being such an inspiration to us and for leading this programme with great passion and pride! Even though the many hours of training have come to an end for now, we are very appreciative of how hard each of the girls worked this year to make us very proud on the day. Thank you, also to Director of Sport, Ms Northcroft, for attending the competition, and her support throughout the season as well. ASHLEY BROCKHURST (12B) AND ABBIE HURNALL (12L) CAPTAINS
