2017 School Magazine
BASKETBALL This year, thirteen Brisbane Girls Grammar School Basketball teams were entered into the QGSSSA competition — the highest number of teams that have ever been entered from the School. The QG competition was overflowing with Girls Grammar teams meaning additional teams were entered in the vacant spots from other schools and one composite 9/10 team in a social competition.
CRICKET The Brisbane Girls Grammar School 2017 Cricket season was very successful and enjoyable for all involved. We started the season with a record number of participants, allowing us to enter six teams in the QGSSSA competition. We were especially pleased with the huge number of Year 7 and 8 girls who played this season — the future of Cricket at this School is in good hands. With a very young Open Team this year, we were delighted with an excellent third place result. Congratulations must also go to the 1A Team for their great season, who also placed third. A highlight of the Cricket season was an incredibly successful Pink Stumps Day. The unprecedented number of supporters cheered on our teams at the Rangakarra Recreational and Environmental Education Centre at Fig Tree Pocket and enjoyed the pink-themed afternoon tea, resulting in us raising a record $870 in support of the McGrath Foundation. Our donation will assist in placing McGrath breast care nurses in communities across Australia and raising awareness about breast cancer. This season would not have been as successful without the commitment of the coaches and managers, who invested their time and effort to help us improve our skills and knowledge of the game. We would also like to extend our thanks to all the parents for supporting their daughters throughout the season and picking their daughters up from training and games every week. Finally, we would like to thank Mr Lanning, who ensured the season ran smoothly. His organisational skills, passion and enthusiasm for the game was reflected in the successes of our teams. We have no doubt that the Cricket programme will continue to grow, and indeed get bigger and better in the years ahead. JOSIE DOOLEY (12G) AND LILY AWYZIO (12M) CAPTAINS
The season quickly passed with the girls honing their dribbling, passing, shooting, defence and communication skills throughout each game. Basketball is a game that requires not only myriad skills, but also a strong sense of teamwork. Without all five players giving it their all on the court, a basketball team cannot succeed and we were so proud to see every girl doing their absolute best. As captains, we were excited by the positive attitude and enthusiasm we witnessed throughout the season as it gave a lot of promise for the future prosperity of Brisbane Girls Grammar School Basketball. Thanks must go to Basketball Co-ordinator, Miss Mann, and Manager, Ms Genders, for their work this season. We also wish to congratulate Opens Coach, Wilhelmina Smith, for her twentieth season with Girls Grammar Basketball. Overall, 2017 Basketball had been extremely memorable and a huge success.
