ROCK CLIMBING
This year was particularly special as Mr Greatorex, who has been the Brisbane Girls Grammar School rock climbing coordinator since the wall was built in 1995, is retiring at the end of the year. We wish him all the best and thank him for his amazing contribution and the personal effort he has put into fostering the rock climbing community at this School. As always, rock climbing has been a fantastic chance to meet new girls, make new friends and, most importantly, climb new walls. Remember, rock climbing is an all-year, low-commitment, recreational activity that Grammar girls from any Year level can join at any time of the year. It’s great fun and new climbers are always welcome! ISABEL PETERS (12M), ASHLYN NICHOLAS (12G) AND ALISON BECKEY (11R)
Grammar girls are lucky enough to have access to the School’s rock climbing wall as a recreational activity. Rock climbing is held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 3.30 pm to 5.00 pm almost every week of the school year. In 2017, we — three senior students — Isabel Peters (12M), Ashlyn Nicholas (12G) and Alison Beckey took on the roles of (11R) assistant instructors, and past student, Annalise Varghese (2009) became coach. Together, we monitor and help teach new climbers how to climb safely and belay with the correct technique. At the beginning of the year, we saw an incredible turn out of eager Year 7s, ready to learn how to climb. In the later terms, a steady stream of new faces, both Year 7, and above, ensured many Grammar girls began their rock climbing journey in 2017. The rock climbing schedule was sometimes disrupted due to other School events and it was at times challenging to maintain a full Monday through Wednesday climbing program throughout the year. However, Term IV saw regular attendance by all the climbers thus maintaining the high level of climbing ability.
