SONGWRITER’S STUDIO
extend themselves beyond the classroom, specifically in the area of songwriting. There is also a variety of opportunities available for songwriters to showcase their creations to a wider audience. Songwriter’s Studio is definitely a space where we have a lot of freedom in regards to the music we create and where are all encouraged to pursue our own individual music styles and interests. It’s a truly amazing opportunity and it’s inspiring to see so many
Songwriter’s Studio is a club, open to all year levels, that meets each Thursday. Each week, aspiring songwriters are assisted by Mr Pennay to develop and widen their songwriting and music technology skills. Some weeks, we work collaboratively, listening to and workshopping each others’ songs while other weeks we learn and develop new and existing skills whether that be on GarageBand (the preferred music editing software) or on instruments. Songwriter’s studio is a really unique and beneficial opportunity to work with and be surrounded by like-minded people who all want to gain invaluable insight and

UNITED NATIONS CLUB
such as the importance of education for girls, particularly in the advancement of developing nations. We’ve explored in detail the refugee crisis and its subsequent ramifications. We have also discussed ISIS, its actions and its methods. Earlier this year, UN Club girls attended the Amnesty International Queensland Schools Conference, where we were further informed on Australian refugee experiences and the conditions people seeking asylum are submitted to in detention centres. The issues discussed in the UN Club are imperative to becoming educated on the realities of the world around us, and, in being pushed to debate with others, we have extended our historical and political knowledge. This year, the United Nations Club has aimed to inform, educate and raise awareness of political issues and social injustices around the world. We’ve discussed and debated topical issues,
STUDENT ENTREPRENEUR CLUB
This year, I was given the amazing opportunity to participate in the Student Entrepreneur Club, a 10-week programme spanning two terms. I was one of about thirty students from both Brisbane Girls Grammar School and Brisbane Grammar School who were able to learn from real-life entrepreneurs from River City Labs. During the programme, we completed an online Emerging Entrepreneurs course to help us brainstorm ideas for a business, share our thoughts with all of the other students and actually created a business. Firstly, we gathered with like-minded people and chose an idea to work on for the programme. While polishing our ideas and creating a presentation, instructors came in and taught us about the ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ of all aspects of starting a business.
All the instructors were quirky and fun while being very passionate and knowledgeable about their field of expertise. The highlight of this club was the Demo Day in the last week. I was astounded at the professionalism of the event, with the Principals of both schools judging alongside two successful entrepreneurs, one of which was Mr Steve Baxter from Shark Tank . Every team worked incredibly hard to create their innovative products and attention-grabbing pitches. This programme was fun and a great learning opportunity for all the students. I am truly grateful to the School for giving us a way to participate in such an innovative programme to help develop twenty-first century skills and expand our career choices. YUWEN GUO (10M)
