Softball
This year, we participated in the final season of Softball in the history of the Queensland Girls’ Secondary Schools Sports Association (QGSSSA) and BGGS. Starting with a win in the inaugural season of 1965, BGGS is one of four schools who have played all 59 years of QG Softball. BGGS has enjoyed a number of victories throughout the years, establishing itself as a powerhouse in Softball. In our final season, the Open and Division 2 Blue teams both finished in a commendable third place, and our Division 1 and Division 2 White teams emerged as champions, coming away with first place in their respective divisions.
Throughout the years, BGGS has had 311 Open players and produced numerous Brisbane and Queensland softball representatives, including three Australian players: Mrs Pauline Harvey-Short OAM (1971), Ms Cathy Rees (1980), and Geordan Shannon (2002). These women have left an indelible mark upon the School’s sporting legacy. We congratulate and extend our gratitude to all the girls who’ve made captaining the last season so special and unforgettable for us, and further thank all those who have played a part throughout the journey of Softball. The camaraderie and sportsmanship forged on the field will endure as a testament of BGGS Softball, and the moments and memories made will never be forgotten. Swimming
Through our six years at BGGS, Swimming has always played an integral role in our lives. It has been a way to keep fit, make new friends, race, and have fun. This year was all of that and more. The season started off a week late, unexpectedly due to pool issues, under the incredible team of coaches led by Matt and Suki. The Interhouse Swimming Carnival saw girls smash their PB’s, vying to get an elusive spot on the QG team. A special congratulations must go to Cate Ward (11B) who took out the 50m Freestyle Championship Final and the overall School Swimming champion. But of course, this was all only a practice for the electric QGSSSA Swimming Championships. A record number of supporters saw the swimmers lifted to new heights; the energy radiating from the stands to the girls. BGGS came a well-earned sixth place, with the 12 years and under achieving an amazing third place. Of course, none of this would have been possible without our amazing coordinator, Ms Brittany Nunan. We know we speak for everyone when we say a massive thank you! Charlotte Kennedy (12B) and Freya Lennon (12L)
