ROBOTICS CLUB
Every Wednesday afternoon on Level 3 of Bread House, students from Year 7 to 12 from BGGS and BGS collaborate to enhance their technological skills in design, engineering and computer programming. Robotics Club aims to prepare students for the annual FTC challenge, FIRST Tech Competition. FTC is a robotics competition for secondary students to compete head-to-head in designing, building, and programming a robot to compete in an alliance format against other teams.
In addition to the competition side of the club, workshops are also held. St Peters Lutheran College, BGS and BGGS FTC teams met on 10 June at Bread House. We had a small competition and collaborated with the other schools, helping them and working together in alliances. We concluded the event with a greater sense of understanding of our robot and a clear vision for the upcoming games. Angelica Skye Ng (10B) Robotics Captain
SPACE TRIP
The winter holidays marked the return of one of BGGS’s longest-running international travel opportunities, the US Space Trip. 45 students and five teachers embarked on a thrilling tour across the United States, starting out in Disneyland before heading off to Huntsville, Alabama, for the main attraction of the trip. Students chose between two five-day immersive courses to participate in at the US Space and Rocket Center: the Advanced Space Academy; or the Aviation Challenge Mach III.
Space Academy had students learning the ins and outs of space travel. Activities included training in SCUBA tanks to mimic zero gravity, engineering team challenges, simulated spacecraft and Mission Control scenarios, and a three-hour extended mission at the end of a jam-packed week. The Aviation Challenge educated participants on the challenges and mechanics of military flight and aviation. Extended military survival missions, F-16 Flight Simulations, team activities, and physical challenges offered a comprehensive insight into the world of aviation and the military. After the graduation ceremony—where we all had the chance to meet renowned astronaut Wendy Lawrence—we travelled back across the country to engage in thrilling activities in many cities. From exploring the Kennedy Space Center and Universal Studios in Florida, to a bus tour in Washington, DC, and a four-day trip of San Francisco/ Sausalito where we saw all that the incredible city has to offer, there was something for everyone and we all had the time of our lives. Space Trip offered the perfect balance of education and entertainment. Everyone who attended was incredibly grateful for the lifelong memories and friendships we formed during our time overseas, and we’re sure to never forget the experiences we’ve had.
