JAPANESE

THE COMPONENTS OF LEARNING JAPANESE AT BGGS A Bento Box is a neatly packed Japanese lunch, dating back to the 12th Century and forming a central part of Japanese culture and cuisine. Often taken to school by children, each component in the meal serves an important role, much like how each component of learning a language at BGGS is special.

Miso soup: Vocabulary From learning how to say your name in Year 7, to expressing your dreams for life after high school in Year 12, we’ve always learned Japanese vocabulary, but it has grown up with us. Rice: PACT This handy acronym for ‘Purpose, Audience, Context, Tone’ has formed the basis of all senior assessments, but has been one of the hardest components to learn. Tofu: Grammar Sometimes firm, and sometimes silken, tofu is much like Japanese grammar; either easy to pick up… or not. Edamame: Aya Sensei Practising with our speaking teacher, Aya Sensei, is always a highlight of the week.

Gyoza: Culture Being able to learn about a new culture has been a treat, just like gyoza is in a bento box. Wasabi: Speaking A challenge adding a bit of spice to learning Japanese, speaking on the spot has taught us resilience and adaptability. Furikake: Class environment Learning Japanese in a class with the same students since Year 7 has allowed us to form close relationships with each other and our teachers, an added benefit we’re so grateful for.
