LATIN For me, languages have always been something I’ve enjoyed studying at Girls Grammar. I remember in younger years, we started off learning body parts on Hercules and singing warped versions of 'happy birthday' in Latin. As I progressed in the subject, Latin has enriched my engagement with other languages and expanded my knowledge of classical times. I am of Sinhalese origin studying both French and Latin at Grammar and I find it fascinating that Latin forms the basis of many languages. Most of us know that Latin has a direct impact on Romance languages, however, many people forget that studying Latin is very useful in laying the foundations for understanding grammar constructions for many secondary languages. Through my understanding of Latin, I’ve enhanced my vocabulary and gained confidence in learning both French and Sinhala. Our senior Cicero and Vergil unit teaches us so much about the culture and historical significance of Roman society. With Vergil narrating Dido’s tragic love story and Cicero speaking so strongly against Catilina we are exposed to the rich figurative language that reflects the myths and might embedded within Roman society. Overall, I am truly grateful to have studied Latin at Girls Grammar. Janudi Abeysinghe (12M)
