2023 School Magazine

FENCING Fencing at BGGS in 2023 was a very popular sport with many students participating for the very first time. Commencing in Term 1, students across Years 7 to 12 began training for the Fencing fixtures in Term 2. 26 BGGS teams entered into the Queensland Schools Team Fencing Competition, where fencers competed against students from Brisbane Grammar School, All Hallows' School, Brisbane State High School and composite teams. Fencing is currently the only sport at BGGS where students compete against other teams regardless of gender, providing a unique and interesting challenge for everyone.

The 2023 season was a great success. At the end of the competitions, four BGGS teams placed first, four teams placed second and eight teams placed third, making 2023 one of the most successful Fencing seasons. BGGS students also participated at state and national levels, and we congratulate them on their achievements. As captains, it was fantastic to watch the fencers develop their skill and technique during the season. One highlight during the season was seeing the increased number of students joining the sport and having fun while participating. To build a community where all students wishing to participate in fencing can come and be enthusiastic in their approach to this fun and energetic sport is something to be proud of.

A special thanks must go to our Head Coach and Fencing Coordinator, Mr Bishop, our other coaches who helped train us, and all the students who participated in Fencing this year. Katie Reid (12E) and Ruby Harvey (12L) Fencing Captains

FOOTBALL

The 2023 BGGS Football season was a smashing success, with all our teams playing their hardest and competing well. In the QGSSSA competition, the Open team placed fourth, Senior A placed third, Intermediate A placed seventh, Intermediate B placed eighth, and Junior A placed second. Football is a sport that welcomes and encourages all girls to play, whether new to the game or a soccer savant. From our junior development squads to the Open team, our tight-knit community celebrates a diverse range of players with passion and persistence.

The overwhelming support created a cherished memory for which we are truly grateful. We would like to thank our amazing coaches for their dedication to helping the girls improve their skills and do their best this season. Thank you to our devoted coordinator, Mrs Finch; without all her hard work and enthusiasm, the season wouldn’t have run smoothly. Finally, we’d like to congratulate the players for their hard work. We have truly enjoyed being Football Captains this year. Eloise Rawlinson (12B) and Georgina Gothard (12W) Football Captains

As the Football Captains, our primary goal this year was to generate greater support for, and within, our teams. We wanted to endorse the culture of ‘playing and staying’, especially to watch the Open players competing in the highest division. Our Play and Stay round against St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School—where our players could work towards ‘True Blue’ spirit status—was a hit. The bleachers were packed with fellow players, supporting students, parents, and friends alike, all there to watch the last game of the season and the final game for our senior students.
