COMPETITIONS

TITRATION

The Titration Competition is an annual chemistry competition hosted by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI). It is open to Chemistry students in Year 11 and 12 who are interested in further developing and refining their titration skills. Titration was appealing to many, as not only did it produce a pale pink solution, but it also provided an extension to our learning from both Unit 2 and 4 Chemistry. The regional competition is open to teams throughout Queensland where top performing teams of three then compete nationally. A special mention must go to Vani Ranjan (11G) and Ellen Baek (11E) who received a High Distinction at the regional competition.

Additionally, Charlotte Clayton (11B), Eva Nykiel (11R) and Mia Cheng (11B) were invited to compete in the National competition at The University of Queensland where each received a gold award and placed fourth at the UQ competition on the day. We would like to extend our gratitude to Ms Magee, our coordinator, and Ms Grundgeiger, our laboratory technician. Without their work and help, we would not have been able to have such a successful outcome. We highly recommend the Titration Competition to any students who enjoy the practical aspect of chemistry and would like to improve their titration skills as it has given us many memorable experiences. Charlotte Clayton (11B), Eva Nykiel (11R) and Mia Cheng (11B)

OLYMPIADS

From 31 July to 3 August, students from Year 10 and 11 participated in the online Australian Biology, Chemistry, and Physics Olympiad Exams, run by Australian Science Innovations (ASI). The Olympiads are open to all Australian secondary school students and the top-performing students are offered a place in ASI’s pathway programs, which may lead to selection in the Australian team for the International Science Olympiads. The Olympiads were an excellent opportunity to develop our skills and knowledge in the various sciences, as well as our general problem-solving strategies. In preparation for the exams, we attended training sessions throughout Term 2 and 3, in which we worked through questions from past papers and reviewed the content covered in the exams. We are very grateful to Ms Monteith, Ms Ross, and Mr Allinson for training us in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, respectively. Adeline Tan (11O)
