YEAR 11 MUSIC
CURRICULUM
M y piece, Spanish Dance , was inspired by pieces that reflect the Spanish identity, including Capriccio Espagnol by Rimsky Korsakov (played in orchestra) and Emily Yu’s (12O) performance of Lalo’s Symphony Espagnole . As a result, I decided to analyse Spanish composer Albeniz’s piano composition, Suite Espanola Op. 47 no 3 Sevilla, then integrated defining elements from his work to compose a piano composition for my music assessment. I find composing an extremely rewarding means of self expression. In this task, I enjoyed combining elements of the ‘Spanish colour’ that was both foreign and appealing to me and elements that I find familiar and comfortable. This allowed me to compose a piece that is not only a reflection of my research in Spanish nationalism in music but a unique and personal expression that conveys my current ‘musical identity’. Mia Li (11R)
YEAR 12 MUSIC I really enjoyed composing my song in class. I am a fan of popular and electronic music and this certainly influenced my piece. My work was inspired by the night lights in the city and I wanted to convey the excitement and happiness experienced after seeing such lights. During the song-making process, I found choosing a good sound and making sure the sounds were balanced quite difficult. However, I was pleased to refine my skills and the overall process was enjoyable. Isabel Tseng (12O) MUSIC EXTENSION T his year, Music Extension involved working on two major self-directed projects and one thesis. We were allowed to complete the thesis early in the year and in our own fashion, thereby giving us an opportunity to expand our knowledge of music in a field of our interest. My classmates and I prioritised the dissertation, to free up time for our other two projects. Here, we gave our all in singing, instrumental performance, electronic pop music and art installations. A particular highlight for me was the mystical music, lights, props and costumes of my installation. The extra support given by Director of Creative Arts, Mr Pennay, ensured that the shows not only went on without a hitch, but provided a breathtaking experience for the audience. Music Extension has proved to be a platform for the skilled at hand and the creative at heart to showcase their unique and undying love for music. Sarah Beavan (12H)
