GRAMMAR ENVIRONMENTAL AND CONSERVATION ORGANISATION
G rammar Environmental and Conservation Organisation (GECO) is a service club for girls passionate about the environment. With more members than ever before, GECO has played a significant role in the School’s commitment to creating a more sustainable future. This year, GECO focused on educating the Girls Grammar community about appropriate waste disposal through a number of projects. These included more recycling bins with informative posters, the ‘Containers for Change’ scheme, sustainable straws, a worm farm, and the installation of organic waste composting and biodegradable materials during Open Day 2019. Through these projects, GECO has assisted in significantly reducing the School’s contribution to landfill. Open conversations regarding the current climate crisis, Assembly presentations, engaging online posters and videos have all contributed to this ongoing development.
Through a whole-school approach and change in thinking, it is evident that GECO has emboldened a proactive and supportive community, and we hope to continue this in the future. Piper Van Der Westhuizen (12O)
SUPPORT FOR DROUGHT AND FLOOD AFFECTED FARMERS
I n early 2019, North Queensland experienced record rainfall and flooding, after enduring years of drought and water restrictions. On Wednesday 20 February, ice blocks were sold to students and staff during lunch to raise funds for these flood and drought affected Queenslanders. All proceeds were donated to GIVIT, a not-for-profit organisation that aims to support vulnerable Australians by matching ‘generosity with genuine need’. GIVIT used the School’s donation to purchase essential goods and fuel vouchers for those affected by the drought and flooding in Queensland.
