SPORT

T he 2019 Athletics season was one of the most successful seasons to date, filled with a sense of team unity and personal bests. Last term at the QGSSSA Athletics competition, every girl embodied this year’s athletics motto, ‘faster, further, higher’. The dedication, drive and persistence on display by Grammar girls was unmatched by any other school. These fantastic results saw Girls Grammar place second overall—a significant improvement on last year’s sixth place. The following girls are congratulated for placing first in their respective events: Olivia Mitchell (8H), Polly Lawrence (10E), Matisse Black (11H), Gia Cayas (11G) and Madeline Clark (12E).

A special congratulations to Jade Somerville (9G) who won two of her events, and to Alessandria-Jayde (9H) and Elizabeth Moss (12E) who placed first in all three of their individual events. The 15B, 17A and 17B 4x100m relay girls also all placed first. This incredible success could not have been achieved without the School’s wonderful team of coaches and Head Coach, Ms Tatianna Grigorieva. We are grateful for the wisdom, expertise and experience they provided to our athletics squad. Finally, we thank our Athletics Coordinator, Mrs Greenland—without her organisation, wisdom and commitment, the season would not have been such a success. Badminton

B adminton is a popular sport played around the world and was first introduced to Brisbane Girls Grammar School in 2006. Badminton at Girls Grammar has since grown and continues to be enjoyed by girls each year. This season started with approximately 160 girls from Years 7 to 12 registering to play. Trials were held in Week 1, Term 3, and girls trained every week since in preparation for the competition. Throughout the season, girls learned communication skills, teamwork and sportsmanship while improving their skills and physical wellbeing. This year, girls took to the courts over two weekends. The Senior and Year 10 teams competed on Saturday 26 October, while the Junior competition was held on Saturday 2 November.

Badminton is sometimes thought to be a leisurely sport, but it is in fact a pressure-driven, fast-paced and exciting game. Throughout the season, all girls have built a deeper understanding of the sport and it has been a pleasure to lead such an enthusiastic, supportive and talented group. We have gained a lot from this experience and are extremely proud of each and every member of our team. We are especially thankful to our Coordinator, Miss Mann, for ensuring that everything ran smoothly throughout the season, as well as our coaches for training and guiding us to achieve our best. We wish all girls the best of luck for their future Badminton seasons. Carol Hu (12B) and Sooyoung Lee (12E) CAPTAINS
