UNITED NATIONS CLUB
CO-CURRICULUM
T his year has been an exciting year for the United Nations (UN) Club. Every second Friday, we discussed topical events, both international and local, ranging from the Venezuelan Crisis to this year’s Australian Federal Election and the Christchurch shootings. The debate has at times, been heated, but always insightful and thought- provoking. Throughout the year, we have become more informed about the world around us, which has imbued members with the confidence to share their educated opinions with others. UN members look forward to another year of rigorous debate and new friendships in 2020. Sophia Gradwell (12E)
US SPACE CAMP
D uring the June/July holidays, 35 intrepid students from Years 9 to 12 embarked on a ‘mission’ to Space Camp to participate in one of three programs— Space Academy, Advanced Space Academy or Aviation Challenge: Mach III . Aviation Challenge: Mach III participants had an amazing week filled with a variety of activities. We completed multiple missions using flight simulators, where we were graded on our ability to take off, navigate, dogfight, and land our planes safely on land or sea. We also learned multiple survival skills including how to build a fire, shelter in the forest and how to safely traverse a dangerous crossing in a patrol line. Another highlight was the field training exercise (FTX), where all aviation groups were sent into the forest to work with or against each other to complete a set task. We worked in teams to stay hidden in the forest while trying to avoid the camp instructors posing as our enemy. Students participating in the two space programs spent the week learning skills required to complete an extended mission to the International Space Station, the Moon or Mars. They completed a variety of astronaut training exercises, engineering challenges and team-building exercises as they attempted to prepare for possible contingencies.
In addition to the six days at Space Camp, our group visited many other cultural sites and attractions. These included: the Kennedy Space Centre and Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida; Arlington National Cemetery, the LincolnMemorial, TheWhite House and the Newseum in Washington DC; and Alcatraz, Fisherman’s Wharf and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
