DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S INTERNATIONAL AWARD PROGRAM

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a youth awards program for people aged 14 to 25 years old which requires the completion of four sections: physical recreation; service; skill and adventurous journey. Brisbane Girls Grammar School offers various eligible co-curricular activities that students can use towards the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Opportunities include various sports, the arts, chess and service clubs. These co-curricular activities allow students to develop an existing skill or learn something new and take on a challenge. For me, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award has been the perfect opportunity to become a more well-rounded student. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award also features the adventurous journey, where students, with the support of Marrapatta staff, work to refine their planning and navigation skills for camping. In preparation, girls work together to plan their meals, equipment, first aid and navigation routes. This year, girls had the opportunity to go to Marrapatta, Conondale National Park and Mt Barney National Park as part of their adventurous journey component. I had the opportunity to participate in the Conondale National Park journey where I was able to spend time outdoors, appreciating nature, while physically challenging myself and developing my camping skills. Overall, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award continues to be a fantastic program that teaches students to utilise time to help people, pursue interests and stay healthy while building new

connections. Ella Ng (11L)
