THE DRAMA STUDIO

In 2018, The Drama Studio offered a multitude of workshop and performance opportunities across a range of theatrical styles. Throughout Term 1, Year 7 to 9 students had the privilege of working with visiting artist, Ms Neridah Waters, from Brisbane’s Backbone Theatre Company. Mrs Miller and Mrs Edwards facilitated the sessions and supported girls as they discovered and mastered new skills in character development. The students were introduced to the importance of preparing their body and voice for a performance and developed their skills in ensemble work and imagination. Year 10 to 12 students were fortunate to work with internationally acclaimed performer and theatre-maker, Ms Noa Rotem, across five workshops focusing on physicality as a way to create meaning in performance. Ms Rotem’s sensitive and explorative workshops challenged students to find new ways to engage an audience with heightened awareness of their body as a primary tool for communication. I am proud of the relationships I have formed with other students across different Year levels in The Drama Studio. Our connection provides us with a safe space where we can express our feelings, thoughts and emotions through practical drama workshops. I would encourage all students to give it a go. Maria Stavrianos (12E) In Semester 2, students in Years 7 to 9 continued to hone their performance skills working on Angela Betzien’s play, Where in the World is Frank Sparrow . Students in Years 9 to 10 also worked on an Immersive Theatre experience with guest artists, Mr Lucas Stibbard and Ms Sarah Winter, to create a unique theatrical experience to precede the Year 9 and 10 Drama Production, Desiree Din and the Red Forest . There are no words to describe Noa’s workshops other than magical. Her teaching techniques engage the students and allow them to feel comfortable, whilst being challenged. Sophie Hillier (10L)
