LIBELLUM SOCIETY

This year, the Libellum Society commenced with an exciting invitation to attend a reception for Libellum’s charity, the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Girls met with The Governor of Queensland, His Excellency The Honourable Paul de Jersery AC, and former Governor General, Dame Quentin Bryce and discussed the importance of literature with like-minded students, teachers and writers. New students with an interest in books, began the year with the ‘Year 7 Welcome’ event. This was based around the theme of ‘Confessions of a Reader’ inviting girls to recount the lengths they have gone to finish a great book. In Term 1, six members represented Girls Grammar at the annual Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Readers Cup Competition. Vicki Chuang (7E), Naomi Dooley (7E), Lauren Zillmann (7H), Leia Kirkham (8B), Yvonne Wang (8W) and Isabel Shorrock-Browne (8R) read five novels in preparation for a gruelling quiz. The team placed seventh overall out of 22 schools in the Brisbane North competition. In Term 2, junior Libellum members attended a book club meeting with Brisbane Grammar School where they discussed the novel Liquidator , by Andy Mulligan. The discussion raised interesting issues about corporate greed and crime. Libellum returned the invitation and the boys visited Girls Grammar to discuss the dystopic Australian novel, The Road to Winter by Mark Smith. Libellum hosted a Harry Potter themed display for Open Day 2018, where future students could sign up to ‘Dumbledore’s Army’, pick up a second-hand book and learn about the Libellum Society. The display featured magical flying broomsticks, Hogwarts House banners, Quibblers, and Quidditch sets, allowing guests to see the literary magic created in Libellum.

In Term 4, Libellum celebrated Book Week and Indigenous Literacy Day, hosting a series of events in keeping with the theme, ‘Find Your Treasure’, including treasure-themed films in the library, hidden golden tickets around the School, lunch-time trivia and a week-long treasure hunt. Libellum raised approximately $500 for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation from these events, which would not be possible without the support of the library staff and Libellum coordinator, Ms Christopherson.
