CALLIGRAPHY CLUB Calligraphy, known as 書道 (shod - o) in Japanese, is the expressive form of decorative writing. The earliest instances of calligraphy date to the Shang dynasty (circa. 1600-1100 B.C.E.) in ancient China. In April 2000, Girls Grammar established their very own Calligraphy Club and it has continued to grow every year since its foundation. The club meets each Thursday after school where students can choose meaningful phrases to write while learning new techniques and brush strokes. On occasion, the club hosts sessions focusing on 墨絵 (sumi-e). Sumi-e is the art of creating vibrant ink wash paintings. As a club, we hone our skills under the guidance of ninth-dan (the highest ranking) calligraphers Fumiko-sensei and Kojima-sensei.

Beginners are always welcome, so come along next year if you are interested and want to try something new and relaxing. Molly Tjelder (10O)
