YEAR 9—JOURNEYS

NOOSA RIVER JOURNEY Canoeing the Noosa River was physically challenging but enjoyable. Walking with our backpacks, in the dark up a hill was also hard, but we preserved as a group, sang loudly and encouraged each other. When we arrived at the sand and saw the glorious sunrise it was worth it—especially because someone brought M&M’s. Solo time was incredible. We sat on the sand by ourselves surrounded by the beautiful landscape and had a chance to reflect. Back at Marrapatta we washed away the dirt, sweat, and sand and laughed together as we reminisced on the highlights of our Noosa River Journey. This trip taught us perseverance, gratitude and the value of togetherness. Jillian Campbell (9O) and Emily Smith (9H) YABBA VALLEY TRAILS Each year I have travelled to Marrapatta, I felt the connections between girls strengthen. It is a time where the more reserved or shy students come out of their shells and become more confident—at least, this was certainly the case for me. Waking up in the frosty mornings, to frozen fingers and toes and frost covered tents was a challenge. We were encouraged to go beyond our comfort zones in the physical challenges which included bike riding, canoeing and hiking. Despite the intensity of some activities, you constantly feel supported as your classmates ‘have your back’, leaving you feeling accomplished at the end of the day. Having access to an Outdoor Education facility like Marrapatta is a special opportunity. Alexandra Keeley (9E) The Year 9 Yabba Valley Trails journey was the best camp I have been on. Waking up each morning surrounded by my friends, freezing in a tent, was far more fun than I expected. I loved the delicious food, the friendly environment of our journey group and the beautiful scenery we rode past each day. Even though riding up the giant hills seemed to go on forever, the cheering from the rest of the group made it easier to persevere. High ropes was also challenging for many girls in my group (myself included), but everyone made it to the top together, thanks to our teamwork. This was an experience I will never forget and I am sad it was my last. Charlotte Venamore (9E)

YABBA VALLEY MULTI The Year 9 Yabba Valley Multi Journey was a memorable experience and while I was glad to hang-up my heavy backpack I will continue to treasure the memories from camp. The Yabba Valley Multi consisted of five days of hiking, canoeing and camping under the stars. The long hike to Borumba Dam and the six-hour canoe onwards to Kingaham Creek may have been tiring but nothing lifts your spirits quite like watching the moonrise and seeing your friends capsize. We were grateful to exchange the bush toilets and cowpats for the familiar sight of Marrapatta and after a quick turn on the high ropes, we gladly washed the grime off in the shower. However, there was sadness in the air as we packed away the tents for the last time. Serena Choo (9M)
