INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

Several other concerts and workshops were held throughout the year to provide musicians an opportunity to build on their performance skills and demonstrate their improvement to the wider School community. These included collaborations with Villanova College, Somerville House, Brisbane Grammar School, Kelvin Grove State High School and Mary MacKillop College. Overall, it has been a year of innovation but the philosophy of the Music faculty has not changed. As part of the music program, Grammar girls were able to thrive in a nourishing and challenging environment while learning skills that can be applied in all areas of their lives, as well as making lasting friendships and ensemble partnerships. This year, as Music Captains, our aim was to emphasise the importance of music in our lives by encouraging girls to be dedicated and passionate about their musical art form. In 2018, instrumental music students were fortunate to benefit from the experience of professional staff and industry musicians. Music concerts were more innovative than previous years. International Women’s Day concert was dedicated to the empowerment of Grammar Women and students and the significance of this initiative was not lost on any girls involved. This progressive concert allowed families to enjoy performances in a variety of venues across the School’s Main Campus. The String Department was fortunate to welcome international violinist, Mr Barnabas Keleman, for a masterclass with Emily Yu (11O), Hannah Kim (10M), Mia Li (10R) and Eilish Chopra (9W). It was amazing to meet Mr Keleman and hearing him talk about his practice was extremely inspiring. He told girls that he did not voluntarily pick up a violin until 17 years of age and that music making is the discipline of practice. The Choral Program at Girls Grammar provided opportunities for all students to be involved in singing. This year we had the opportunity to participate in a workshop and concert with ARIA award winning acapella group, The Idea of North , who inspired girls with their expertise. Four groups competed in the 2018 Queensland Youth Music Awards (QYMA). Chamber Winds, Albinoni Strings and Encore secured first place in their respective divisions and Wind Symphony were awarded second place and highly commended. These achievements are testament to the strength of the music program at Girls Grammar and the dedication and hard work of the girls and teachers involved.
