QUEENSLAND ASSOCIATION OF MATHEMATICS TEACHERS (QAMT) YEAR 7 AND 8 MATH QUIZ

On Monday 30 July 2018, eight students from Years 7 and 8 participated in the Queensland Association of Mathematics Teachers Year 7 and 8 Quiz. The afternoon compromised five challenging sections: estimation; problem-solving; individual short answer; speed and general knowledge. The competition was a wonderful opportunity for students to explore interesting and challenging questions outside the classroom. The afternoon also provided girls with an opportunity to improve their team skills as well as individually, so that we were able to answer all the questions accurately in a short amount of time. The afternoon was challenging and quite nerve racking, but still very enjoyable. We all appreciate being able to experience this type of competition. Yvonne Wang (8W) and Abigail Woodcock (8W)

MATH CHALLENGE FOR YOUNG AUSTRALIANS

The Maths Challenge for Young Australians is a problem-solving competition held during Term 1. The competition consisted of six challenging problems to be solved over four weeks. I found the competition very enriching, as it exposed me to mathematical concepts not covered in as much detail in the classroom. In particular, I learned to formulate models and explain my reasoning behind them, helping me to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms of problems. I enjoyed the environment of the competition, which was more independent and research-based as opposed to the typical structured and timed classroom setting. Overall, this was a very interesting competition that taught me valuable problem-solving skills to use in the classroom and beyond. Abigail Lui (10O)
