FRENCH Senior French this year provided the perfect opportunity to both expand our world views and our knowledge of all things French! Geopolitical issues dominated our curriculum in 2016, from studying the various environmental issues that affect the global community; to looking into the diverse health and social problems that affect different socio-economic groups. Term III saw us narrow our focus to the discussion of our own personal goals, completing assessment based around our hopes for the future. However, Senior French is not all work and no play! Our French teachers treated us to the occasional culinary delight from Brisbane-based patisserie, Le Bon Choix, and we furthered our cultural knowledge with the viewing of the film, Le Grand Bleu , a modern classic of the French Cinéma du look genre. No matter the topic, it is safe to say that our delightful teachers brought a lot of joie de vivre to the classroom!

LATIN This year Senior Latin has proved to be, true to form, an engaging and immersive learning experience. From the study of the Roman-tic epic verse of Vergil, to the allusive rhetoric of Cicero, the Year 12 Latin cohort has studied a broad range of exciting and influential Roman texts. We have also had the opportunity to brush up on our Latin cultural knowledge, with an interesting excursion to the R.D. Milnes Antiquities Museum at The University of Queensland. While there we were fortunate enough to receive a guided tour of the museum, and participate in a workshop focusing on the study and classification of ancient artefacts, with particular emphasis on the dating of Imperial Roman coinage. My favourite unit of study this year would have to be our poetic analysis of Vergil’s Aeneid , a thrilling and descriptive piece of antique literature. The application of both modern and ancient poetic analysis to Vergil’s verse brought to life both the legend, and its myriad characters.
GERMAN Year 11 German has taught students to express their opinions about various topical issues faced by adolescents today. These issues include family and relationships, media, fashion, music and ideas of beauty. Learning about these topics gives us more confidence in our communication skills, and it means we have the ability to engage in not only detailed, but meaningful and interesting conversation with Germans our age. The topic I found most intriguing was music, because it gave us a chance to immerse ourselves into German pop culture and the lives of young Germans. Learning about German grammar, although trying at times, proved itself beneficial in other subjects which required more complex sentence structures, such as English. As opposed to German in junior school, senior German has made us take a more insightful approach to the topics, creating a more relaxed learning atmosphere in the classroom, which is thoroughly enjoyable.
