2016 School Magazine
YEAR 7 Throughout 2016, Year 7s have been exposed to several different Sciences. We have learnt about Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry and, now, we are learning Physics. Part of our learning involves practical tasks such as learning to prepare and complete experiments e.g. measuring rates of evaporation. Our assessments involve examinations and Scientific Reports. These have been challenging but rewarding experiences.
YEAR 8 Year 8 Science this year focused on broadening our knowledge of life around us and applying that knowledge experimentally. An experience we won’t forget was the heart dissection. It was interesting to see the heart in real life and how different it was to diagrams. We also enjoyed looking at the micro-organisms under the microscope, creating chemical reactions and launching erasers with the catapult we built in class. YEAR 9 Science this year has been interesting, informative and intriguing. We have learnt a range of new knowledge in chemistry, physics, biology and earth science. In chemistry, we learnt about more elements from the very puzzling periodic table and how they interact in chemical reactions. In physics we learnt about radiation and how it affects humans, and different types of heat transfer. Biology focused on an extensive study of malaria while also covering the complex systems concerned with homeostasis. Finally, in earth science, we have widened our knowledge about the Earth and its many layers and features. Overall, science has been challenging at times, but it we know that it is beneficial to us and will be important in our futures. YEAR 10 In Science this year, Year 10 learnt about DNA and evolution in Biology, bonding and reactions in Chemistry and motion due to solar power in Physics. Finally, we learnt about the motion of planets and other celestial bodies in Astronomy. Disregarding Maths, we learnt that sometimes multiplication can equal division in Biology. In Chemistry, jokes were hard to make as we lacked the element of surprise. Meanwhile, we tried to understand the gravity of Physics. Finally, in Astronomy we were reminded that the world didn’t revolve around us, but rather the sun. Overall, we had a lot of fun throughout the year and learnt many interesting facts.
