CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF ACHPER WOMEN IN SPORT BREAKFASTS The annual Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Sport (ACHPER) Women in Sport Breakfast celebrated its 25th breakfast in 2016. The first breakfast was delivered in 1991, and was the brainchild of the ACHPER QLD Special Interest Group, chaired by Brisbane Girls Grammar School’s Dean of School, Mrs Pauline Harvey-Short (the then Head of the Health, Physical Education and Sport Faculty). The aim of the breakfast was to provide role models for schoolgirl athletes, raise the profile of sportswomen and to provide insight into athletes’ lives to inspire young women to get involved and stay involved in physical activity. Brisbane Girls Grammar School has been a longtime supporter of the breakfast, and students have attended every function over the past 25 years. In 2016 forty-one Year 11 and 12 Senior Physical Education students, along with nine Health and Physical Education staff attended the breakfast, with BGGS having the largest contingent of attendees. As a part of the breakfast three elite athletes, Claire Polkinghorne (Football), Maddison Keeney (Diving) and Laura Clemesha (Netball) spoke to the over 700 attendees about their experiences at elite level sport. Additionally, and more significantly for BGGS, Mrs Harvey-Short and Doune Macdonald, the two founders of the breakfast, spoke and reflected on women in sport over the past 25 years. As part of the breakfast ACHPER QLD recognises the achievements of student athletes from across the state through the Sporting Star Awards. Two Year 11 PE students received Highly Commended certificates in the Shooting Star (15 years and over) category – Minna Atherton (11B) for swimming and Chloe Williams (11R) for figure skating. At the breakfast we were excited to hear the announcement that Minna was awarded joint ACHPER QLD Shining Star Award for 2016. Congratulations Minna. Additional exciting news for BGGS was the announcement that old girl Kirby Short (2003) received the Inspirational Teacher Award for 2016. Kirby currently works as a HPE teacher at Wavell State High School and is a member of the 2016 Brisbane Heat and Queensland Fire cricket teams. It was an exciting morning for Brisbane Girls Grammar School and a wonderful celebration of women and girls in sport.
YEAR 7 HPE
Year 7 HPE has been an extremely educational and fun experience. We have been participating in a vast range of sports, such as lifesaving, athletics, gymnastics and ball skills, which have all been really enjoyable and beneficial to developing important skills. As well as playing and learning about physical activity, Year 7 students have been doing many enlightening theory and health assignments. Our most recent task was to create a Teen Vogue article about one of the effects of puberty. Students chose from a wide range of topics such as sun protection and self-esteem. Overall, year 7 HPE in 2016 has been an incredibly useful and fun experience which has benefited students in many ways.
PHOEBE SAMPSON (7M)
YEAR 10 HPE The Year 10 Health and Physical Education program in 2016 was very stimulating, fun and challenging (and a constant reminder that not all of us would be attending the Games of the XXXI Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro). The program consisted of an extensive range of interesting units, including First Aid. We particularly enjoyed this unit, as it was an incredibly fun and rewarding experience. As a bonus, we were able to earn our St John. Ambulance First Aid and CPR certification. The unit was very hands-on, allowing us to put our theory into practice. We were presented with various scenarios, ranging from minor accidents to calamities, where we utilised our knowledge to manage the situation in order to confidently ‘save’ our patients and develop a valuable life skill.
