YEAR 12 DRAMA From Blanche DuBois to Mother Courage, Year 12 Drama has allowed us to expand our horizons to explore different portrayals of femininity in both classical and contemporary theatre. The study of such complex characters enabled us to better understand the psychology behind each individual, that which influences the trajectory of the storyline. Our units of study were comprised of three types of assessment; forming, responding, and presenting, all of which enabled us to appreciate and experience each element involved in the production of a performance – those of the audience, director and actor. Responding assessment, in particular, gave us the opportunity to enrich our appreciation for all three perspectives as we were able to absorb several amazing pieces of theatre, Queensland Theatre Company’s The Secret River and The Wider Earth . However, it is safe to say that the aspect of Drama we treasure the most is the nurturing and warm learning environment created by our teachers and peers.

Drama has always been my favourite class of the day. This is because of many reasons. The most prominent being the constant enthusiasm of my teacher Ms Martin. Ms Martin, no matter what day it is, welcomes our class with a warm smile and a level of interest that is not matched by any other teacher. Her love of teaching Drama to us, allows me to share her eagerness to participate in the class. As a result of this and Ms Martin’s positive approach to teaching Drama, I feel I am able to give an exceptional amount of effort in comparison to my other classes, knowing that I am in no way judged by my class or my teacher. This effort has allowed me to learn not only exceptional Drama skills, which I will be able to use post-graduation but create connections with my classmates who I now think of as good friends.
Being a Senior Drama student at BGGS has really shaped me as a person. Experiencing this subject over this final year at Girls Grammar has been like nothing else. This subject has pushed me to step forward constantly and be the best Drama student I can be. Drama is a very valuable subject as it makes you have to step out of your comfort zone and put yourself in the shoes of another person, and push yourself to be creative and escape the norm for a while. The teachers in charge of this subject are of significant importance to what makes me enjoy walking into Drama every day. 12.3 has become a little supportive family whom I can count on always to make me feel better when I’m stressed and things are tough, all while coming together and sharing our love of theatre.

Being a BGGS Drama girl has been one of the best experiences of my school life. This subject has an enthusiastic, fun and loving environment that is fostered by the wonderful teachers who have helped us along the way. Drama has helped every girl as they develop a wide range of skills from performing with confidence to understanding and writing about a powerful, dramatic piece of theatre. Through studying classics such as A Streetcar Named Desire and Mother Courage , I have learned how to shape my own piece of theatre as well as perform with a bunch of girls who have the same drive and passion for our much-loved subject. I see my Drama class as family rather than a bunch of students: we support each other, grow together and, most importantly, we have fun together.
