SPORTS CENTRE REFURBISHMENT
In November of 2014, Brisbane experienced one of the most destructive storms in its recent memory. The Sports Centre suffered significant damage as a result of large hail stones breaking through the skylights and from the ensuing torrential ‘indoor’ rain. As the wooden floor dried-out, it buckled and there was a ten centimetre difference in the height in many sections of the floor. The floor would have to be replaced entirely and it would take six months to do it. To say that the first semester of 2015 was a challenge for the Health and Physical Education Faculty and our students is an understatement but, with some creative scheduling and a determination that our programmes were not going to suffer, we got through it. The end result is more than we could have imagined. The School now has a brand new North American Maple (recognised as the world’s best) timber sports floor that extends throughout the Sports Centre in a way that further enhances our students’ ability to learn in, about, and through Health and Physical Education.

Health and Physical Education has been a fun-filled subject, and we have really enjoyed learning about many different sports and activities. This year in HPE we enjoyed learning about gymnastics, touch football, athletics, netball, diamond-cricket and more. We also learnt more about the theory-based parts of HPE which was a first for many students as it is less common in primary school. Some people might think that this side of HPE is less enjoyable; however, we have learnt so much and it has prepared us for when we get older. Year 7 HPE has been a subject to remember. Hopefully next year’s Year 7s will get the chance to play ‘beam-ball’ - 7H’s favourite game! MATISSE BLACK (7H) AND SOPHIE FINCH (7H)
As members of Girls Grammar’s first Year 7 cohort, we have had a great time learning in Health and Physical Education. We have learnt lifesaving, gymnastics, and many other sport- related skills and games. Our class favourite has been ‘beam-ball’. In the theory component of HPE, we have learnt about nutrition, personal health and decision-making, all of which will help us in the future. We have really enjoyed our first year of HPE at Girls Grammar
and we look forward to it next year. JOSEPHINE BURKE (7H) AND AMELIA PERRIN (7H)
