MUSIC SAMSARA MEERA PRASAD (12O)

As part of our composing and performing assessment, the Year 12 music girls undertook a massive task of rewriting the entire score for the non-narrative documentary film, Samsara. An individual clip was chosen and assigned to each girl where they experimented with ideas and explored new ones.

The girls have spent two terms composing with a diverse range of techniques to produce their finest and most sophisticated works. As young, aspiring musicians we were fortunate enough to work with musical group, Topology. This external music group challenged us to be professional and proficient as we ended with an epic live performance of our own scores playing behind the film. The experience of Samsara was incredibly enriching and rewarding, the girls were pushed to their limits and have composed some of their best works in their music career. The entire project of Samsara was really a one-of-a-kind task, resulting in a truly unforgettable performance.

Year 11 Classroom Music commemorated the 140th year of Brisbane Girls Grammar School through the project ONE FOUR ZERO. This project focused on composing short scores for individually chosen films that were 140 seconds in length. We were required to write for a group of four or five, and had to develop skills writing film scores for very specific and unique instrumental and performer needs. In terms of the composing process, girls found it most beneficial to form ideas on their instruments, and then bring them into Sibelius, a digital composing software programme. Girls chose to write for a broad selection of films; some of which included Life of Pi, Beauty and the Beast and Coraline . The ONE FOUR ZERO project was both exciting and challenging, and we look forward to similar tasks next year!
