KIRSTEN JACK MEMORIAL LEUKAEMIA COMMITTEE ANNIE GYNTHER (12E) AND AARTHI SRITHARAN (12M)

What is the Kirsten Jack Memorial Leukaemia Committee? It is more than just a committee raising funds for leukaemia and other cancers. It is a passionate, dedicated group of students, from Years 7 to 12, along with Dr Farley, Dr Kimber and Mrs Kempe, who are motivated to help raise funds for people whose lives have been touched by cancer. Through various fundraising activities throughout the year, we raise money for research into a cure for leukaemia and to support and improve the lives of those who have been affected by leukaemia and other cancers. The Kirsten Jack Memorial Leukaemia Committee, or KJMLC, is named after Kirsten Jack, a Year 10 student at Girls Grammar who was diagnosed with acute leukaemia and passed away in 1977. The Committee was established in 1978 in Kirsten’s memory by Mrs Mary Hukins (a BGGS staff member) and Kirsten’s close friends — Claire Florence (1978), Jane Carpenter (1978) and Anna Blocksidge (1978). Term I started with a massive fifty members for our first fundraising activity, the very first bake stall of the year. Term II was equally busy with the annual selling of our hand-made Mother’s Day cards and a royal-themed bake stall for the Queen’s Birthday. Term III saw the most jam-packed term of all with Open Day and our famous rocky road, hand-made cards, face painting, and the symbolic raffle of our giant teddy bear named Beau. We also sold daffodils for Daffodil Day and our handmade Father’s Day cards. Term IV brought Bandanna Day, another bake stall, and an activity with the Childhood Cancer Support organisation.

We are delighted to have raised more than $5000 this year and must congratulate all our KJ girls and teachers on this momentous effort and their hard work. It has been an honour to be captains of KJ and to raise money for such a worthwhile cause. It has been so enjoyable to work with a wonderful and passionate group of girls and teachers. We hope that this long-standing and meaningful committee continues to be as passionate and successful into the future.
