NETBALL CHARLOTTE ANDREWS (12W) AND LAUREN NIXON-SMITH (12G), CAPTAINS

Netball in 2015 heralded the introduction of four Year 7 teams, meaning BGGS fielded twenty teams with 210 girls competing in the QGSSSA competition. This was the largest number of girls competing in netball since it started at the School in 1908. The competitive season involved many challenging early morning and late afternoon training sessions, early morning games and travelling to other schools for away games. There was an amazing level of skill shown throughout the year levels and it was no surprise that four teams won premierships — congratulations to the Senior C, 10B, 10C and 8A teams. The attitude of the netball cohort this year has been spirited and encouraging, reflected in the eighteen out of twenty teams which had top four finishes This year we focused on promoting a ‘supportive team culture’ that expanded beyond individual teams, and towards the entire Grammar netball community. The encouragement and level of support the girls gave to their peers saw a positive and increased sense of community and connection between year levels. Each home game, the netball cohort contributed to a morning tea table for the girls and parents. We received positive feedback for the generous contributions from the girls, including ‘best table of food in the whole competition’ from Clayfield College. RHYTHMICGYMNASTICS CANDICE GREEN (12E) AND LAUREN MCPHERSON (12E), CAPTAINS Rhythmic Gymnastics had another successful season in 2015 as we welcomed a new division of Year 7s to the team. With a total of thirty-seven Year 7 and 8s new to the sport, the girls quickly grasped the technique and disciplines of the sport. Training throughout Term II predominantly took place at the Bowen Hills YMCA facility where the team learnt and practised their routines in preparation for the upcoming QGSSSA competition. However, it was the holiday training where the coaches saw exponential improvement from all rhythmic gymnasts. In Term III, the team performed at the practice competition and at Open Day, in order to gain invaluable competition experience and confidence for the fast- approaching QGSSSA competition. This preparation definitely paid off as all teams performed outstandingly with the Year 7 teams placing seventh, sixth and third, and the Year 8 teams placing sixth, fourth and first. The B grade and A grade teams both performed their best and accomplished fourth and seventh respectively. Finally, after a tough competition, the Open pairs narrowly missed out on the title, being awarded a second place while the Open group placed fourth.

2015 welcomed Ms Rees as our new netball coordinator; a valuable addition to the BGGS netball community, who ensured the season ran smoothly. As Netball Captains, we felt privileged to lead such a wonderful and passionate group of girls. It truly has been an honour to lead a cohort of talented and competitive sportswomen who have played with integrity. We have loved being your captains this year. Remember, talent wins games but it’s teamwork that wins championships.

The support and enthusiasm of the team was well maintained throughout the season and always made it a pleasure to be representing them as captains. Thank you to all the coaches but especially to our coordinator Mrs O’Gorman who worked tirelessly to facilitate an enjoyable and successful 2015 rhythmic gymnastics season.
