2015 School Magazine

HOCKEY LILY KESSLING (12L) AND ZAHRA KNIGHTS (12R), CAPTAINS The 2015 season of BGGS hockey marked a significant milestone with the introduction of Year 7s into the programme and the naming of our Fig Tree Pocket fields — Rangakarra — and in particular the Daphne Welch Oval, named after old girl and hockey superstar Daphne Pirie (Welch, 1949). For the first time, Girls Grammar entered six teams in the competition, three Junior and three Senior, making us the school with the most teams participating. This depth in the squad contributed to our successful season, with Junior A and Junior B Blue coming first undefeated, Senior A White placing third and Junior B White and Senior B achieving seventh. This success could not have been possible without the ongoing support and expertise of Mrs Lambert, who not only provided guidance to the whole squad, but also coached the Opens team to a commendable third place. This was an outstanding achievement for all teams considering the high standard of the QGSSSA competition this year.

FOOTBALL ANNA STEVENS (12H) AND BRIANNA BLACK (12L), CAPTAINS

With the Matildas making it all the way to the quarterfinals in the Women’s World Cup, only narrowly defeated by Japan, Australian women’s football is entering a new era that has inspired many of the players at Brisbane Girls Grammar School. This year, football at Girls Grammar has expanded and improved in ways never before seen. As we welcomed Year 7s into our school, increased numbers allowed us to establish an additional team. The football season ended on 29 May with an intense round against Clayfield College. All the teams fought hard in this game, coming away with some impressive results. Throughout the season, both the coaches and the girls were committed at training, which was reflected in the commendable achievements. The Opens and Senior teams finished sixth on the ladder, the Junior As and B(ii)s finished fifth, and the Junior Bs finished fourth. These achievements, which we are all so proud of, would not have been possible without the assistance of our talented coaches whose commitment to our teams encouraged us to push ourselves throughout the season: Sebastian Monteverde, and old girls Sophie Dreves (2010), Alexandra ‘Stormy’ Scarlett (2012), Nikola Gow (2013) and Gabrielle Bennett (2014). Special thanks must also go to our coordinator Mrs Cross, whose constant enthusiasm and support ensured a fun and memorable season. With many of the junior girls demonstrating excellence on the field, the future for football at BGGS is looking very promising.

Congratulations to Grace Mitchell (10R) for receiving the QGSSSA Hockey Encouragement Award, recognising both her commitment to the team and impressive performance on the field. Congratulations also to Phoebe Lingard (7H), Grace Mitchell (10R) and Emma Bills (11W) who represented Queensland in their respective age groups. Many other girls in the squad also competed at the State Championships as part of Brisbane or Metropolitan North teams, showing the strength and depth of BGGS hockey. Overall, Girls Grammar hockey has had an extremely successful and enjoyable season. Many thanks to all the coaches, Team Manager Mr McGarry, Mrs Moore and Ms Euler, who have provided us with support and encouragement. As captains, it has been a pleasure to lead BGGS hockey and experience the improvement of the squad throughout the year, evident in our results. We are so proud of the girls’ achievements and have embraced every moment of the season, making our last year of Girls Grammar hockey so memorable.
