C11:^'0, ;^^,;^^ COUNT1:1^'Y In 1994 Brisbane Girls Grammar Cross Country initiated a twenty-year winning streak. Twenty years is a significant age for anyone. not in the least for a record Ever since I strolled into Victoria Park five years ago for my first training session, cross country has been an integral part of my Grammar experience. I soon realised and respected the importance of the legacy of the aGSSSA victories - we were already at 15-in-a-row by 2009 When I was elected to be the Cross Country Captain in 2013 for the (insert intake of breath here) possible twentieth aGSSSA win. I was aware of the enormous pressure on the cross country team to up hold such an exceptional record In our ranks. as we raced up hill and down dale, through mud and mist. we grew strong in the knowledge that this was a challenge we could face - and it was a challenge we wanted to overcome! While I have no doubt that the entire School community would have been just as supportive if Grammar had succeeded to gain second place. the relief and joy I felt when we secured our twentieth, consecutive aGSSSA crown was overwhelming
On arrival, the many spectators present contributed to an atmosphere thick with excitement amongst the players, coaches and School dignitaries with the girls feeling special, attracting their very own paperazzi! it was an extremely proud moment for us. as captains, to lead our team out for the first game ever to be played on the new sporting fields Expectations of performance were high and the girls were ready to eXchange their nerves for determination when we won the toss against Clayfield College. electing to bat with Teigen Testa (12B) facing the first- ever ball to be bowled at Grammar's beautiful fields Our batting attack was very strong and the innings ended with Grammar on 2 wickets for 73 runs Following this, the girls were excited to take matters into their own hands, quite literally. when fielding. Every bowler's accuracy was brilliant on the day, as keeping our extras down was the key to keeping Clayfield's run chase under control. At the end of the match. BGGS cricketers were proud of their achievements with Grammar celebrating a 21-run victory The Seconds were unluckily defeated in their first game against Somerv'Ile House rr but prevailed in their second match, defeating St Margaret's with two overs to spare. The Second xi played their final game against Somerville House. and was defeated by 6 wickets Despite the rain resulting in a shortened season. both teams played remarkably well, with the Opens tying in second place and the Seconds placing fourth Special mention is to be made of Emily MCCormick (12Nl) for her consistent performance with the bat and the ball and to Elizabeth Kong (10E> for receiving the Encouragement Award. Congratulations to all girls for their training efforts, positive attitude. unity and devotion to cricket throughout the year
I will never forget the ecstatic faces of the team, coaches and parents or the excitement in the atmosphere as we celebrated the win with war cries. cheers and many. many photographs. That day. for me. stands out as a clear highlight of my high school career While the win topped off the entire experience, the sense of community and achievement within the team shone brighter than the closely guarded aGSSSA trophy. Cross Country 2013 was an unforgettable. sweaty journey but the aGSSSA Championship made every grassy early morning. hot afternoon meet, disappointed tear and painful injury worthwhile. This season was an irreplaceable. magical experience and I hope everyone else had as much fun as I did
