There have been many opportunities this year for BGGS students to display the results of their hard work and to demonstrate improvements in musical ity and technique. The String players have been very busy performing in numerous concerts and competitions across the year The first weekend back at School in Term I saw Vivaldi and Chamber Orchestra players rehears'rig and bonding at the Senior Music Camp. which was a fantastic experience for new members. Year 8 students were soon listening to some of the top ensembles play at the Welcome to New Families Concert and many played their first performance at BGGS at the Autumn oncert. The first string festival of the year was at Brisbane Grammar School where Chamber Orchestra combined with the orchestras of BGS, Somerville House and Melbourne's Camberwell Grammar. This was exciting for the girls and a great way to learn to play with new desk partners and under a different conductor. The Edmee Gainsford Viola competition followed, with Emma van Heeringen <12R) receiving the prize viola for a year Term 2 began with the Cathedral Concert, where Chamber Orchestra performed three movements from Concerto Grosso for String Orchestra by Ralph Vaughan Williams and Albinoni's Adagio Ih G major for Organ and Strings, with guest artist Christopher Wrench. Symphony Orchestra, Vivaldi Players, Albinoni Strings. Brandenburg Strings. Corelli Strings and chamber groups all played at the two May Concerts The instrumental competitions followed almost immediately afterwards. After a tough adjudication. Jasmine Jin (110) won the Gillies Violin prize and Chloe Yap 02B) won the BGGS String prize. Both girls made it to the finals and competed at the Artists in Concert for the R. T. and A. E. Jefferies Bursary. Special mention goes to Chloe Yap for winning the Bursary for the third year in a row, the only student ever to do so

There were many musical events in Term 3. beginning with an exciting Open Day where most string ensemb es performed. Next, there was the Gillies Ensemble competition. where many chamber groups competed The second string festival of the year, StringFest, was then held at BGS and Chamber Orchestra played with various schools across Brisbane. The girls played Concerto Grosso op 6 Do 5 by Handel and Romance by Gerald Finzi. Vivaldi Strings played in the Upper Intermediate String Festival, and Albinoni, Brandenburg and Corelli Strings played in the Intermediate String Festival a week later with students from BGS. Somerville House and All Hallows' School The biennial Australian Combined Schools Music Festival occurred in Brisbane this year from 19 to 23 June. The festival had three major components (choir. band and orchestra). Internationally recognised conductor Richard Gill directed the orchestra playing Jupiter and Mars from Gustav Hoist's work The Planets and ensured the fantastic success of the Festival Two weeks into Term 4 was Gala. a fobulous night on which Chamber and Symphony Orchestra performed All other string ensembles p ayed at the Spring Concert a few weeks later. Symphony Orchestra concluded the year at Speech Day. Overall, it has been a busy and exciting year for all string ensembles and a rewarding and memorable experience for every string player
