COMMUNITY FOCU9

2008 proved to be a busy and successful year for the Kirsten Jack Memorial Leukaemia Committee (KJMLC). The Committee actively raised funds for Canteen, Daffodil Day and the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation KJMLC began when an enthusiastic and ever optimistic member of the Grammar community, Kirsten Jack, passed away from Leukaemia In tru Grammar spirit, Kirsten's friends wanted to ensur that their friend's death would not be in vain In memory of Kirsten we aim to raise awareness of the disease, raise money to improve the quality of life for cancer patients, and help researchers in the I endeavours to find a cure KJLMC raised approximately $1,000 during the course of the year. Thanks must go to the members of the Committee for their enthusiasm and determination and to Ms I Smith for her constant support throughout the year

In Australia more than one in fifty-seven women are homeless.

Brisbane Girls Grammar School has a long established connection to the Second Chance Programme Fundraising Group-an organisation dedicated to ending homelessness for local women. This year, the doors were opened to Years I I an 12 girls for the first time. As a result, the Committee celebrated a record number of students ready to make a positive impact on the community through building awareness and raising vital funds. After being informed about the desperate need for household goods, the year kicked off with a Linen Drive for Logan City Youth and Family Services. To supplement this project, the girls got baking to celebrate international Woman's Week with a colourful green and purple theme. The wider School community was very generous and overall we exceeded our expectations considerably At Open Day, the Second Chance Stall held a number of ra Ies and offered extensive information on homelessness in Brisbane. The Committee managed to raise $660 on the evening which is testament to its members' enthusiasm. The Committee also assisted in promoting the Second Chance Programme's annual Swing Into Spring fundraising event, a huge night of music, food and entertainment that proved to be a great success. We appreciate everyone's origoi. g support and enthusiasm, and we hope that following years will be filled wi h opportunities for even bigger and better events.
