(;!'^o0 Members of the School's Grammar Environmental and Conservation Organisation (GECO) believe in generating an exciting future through having the courage to face the challenge to develop an environmentally sustainable society and culture. GECO's primary role is to make this transition as fast and smooth as possible-minimising environmental causal ities. Hence, this year has seen a focus on education and raising awareness of environmental issues. Kicking off with a showing of the film An inconvenient Truth early in the year and continuing with 'green' messages over the course of the year, we finished with the School's inaugural Environmental Cafe in Term IV, which was enjoyed by all who attended. The Grammar community will be able to see the direct result of the numerous fundraising activities when solar panels to supply the School with a source of renewable energy are installed. Tess Evans (12W) and Elspeth MCConaghy (12L), the School's Service Captains, organised a 'Grammar Goes Green' day where more than fifty senior students helped plant trees in the local area. Save Our Waterways reported that we were the most efficient tree planters they have supported! This year has also seen many new trees being planted at Marrepatta, some of which were sponsored by visitors on Open Day. As part of our support for Planet Ark's National Tree day in August, Miss F Williams kindly assisted us in planting a tree next to Gehrmann Lane. A former group with a new identity-this year the Reading Group has undergone many changes. First, and most importantly of all, we have changed our name and are now officially known as the Libellum Society. Libellum is Latin for little books. The members are very excited about the new name, providing a sense of a new era for the group as they strive to excel further in their charity exploits, as well as improving their book lists and reviews. We have had some fantastic co- ordinators with whom to share our love of books this year-Mrs R Rentz and Ms G Geldard were wonderful in Semester I and Mrs K Cooke in Semester 2. The group put a great deal of planning into their stall for Open Day aiming to make it the biggest and best ever. in recognition of the newly released Stephanie Meyer Book, Breaking Dawn, we decided to celebrate by making it the stall's theme. This was achieved through the decorations and our colouring- in competition. Congratulations to the winner of the colouring competition, Caitlin Middlin (9H) who won the first three books in the Stephanie Meyer series. ^"eczdr^, ^!',^20440

GECO membership has remained small but dedicated, thanks largely to Mrs C Wood+ord's unfailing enthusiasm, so I encourage all people interested to come along to future meetings and activities. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Rethink. And Join GECO!
