it has been a year full of great success for fencing-a challenging and exciting sport that requires not only fitness, strength, flexibility and co- ordination, but also intelligence and fast thinking. Fencing at Girls Grammar is additionally about making friends and connections that can last a lifetime. The annual training day in Term I focused on developing and enhancing the girls' skills as well as making friends. The main competition for the Girls Grammar fencing squad is the Brisbane Secondary Schools Teams Championships, in which all girls performed exceptionally well. in tough and challenging competition Girls Grammar managed to finish third overall. Special mention must go to Kathleen Simpson (80) and Grace Cowderoy (12E) who both individually ranked first and second respectively in their divisions. In August two teams from Girls Grammar competed in the Queensland State School Teams' Championships. All girls fenced exceptionally well, with the Open Team eventually finishing as equal champions. Fencers also performed well individually at State Championships with five age champions- Victoria TaylorPhilip (12W) in U17 Epee, Kathleen Simpson (80) in U15 Sabre, Anna Crawford (TOB) in U15 Epee, Katherine Boys (9W)in U15 Foil and Annie Devereuax (8L) in U13 Foil. This year there were also three Queensland representatives from Brisbane Girls Grammar School at the National Championships. All girls competed admirably with stand out results by Katherine Boys who placed seventh in the U15 Foil and He Ien Collyer (I I G), who finished sixth in U17 Sabre. it has been a lot of fun and highly challenging and all of the teams' continual effort, involvement and enthusiasm are highly infectious in being part of the Girls Grammar fencing community. Brisbane Girls Grammar Hockey fielded two teams in the Brisbane Women's Hockey Association Competition. Junior Turf 2 and Junior Grass 3 were particularly successful and secured places in the semifinal rounds. Under the guidance of Head Coach Miss C Taylor, coaches and players united to compete in another successful aGSSSA season. The Open team rose to the challenges provided from other schools by demonstrating their spirit and determination through teamwork. The Senior A team is to be coinmended for their successful season asserting their dominance over the competition with outstanding displays of individual skill and teamwork. The Years 8,9, and 10 teams continued to perform with enthusiasm and commitment. Particular mention must go to the Year 9 team on their emphatic wins. Girls Grammar entered an "all Year level" team in the State Medibank Private Competition and after completing two rounds were unfortunately defeated' For the first time, Girls Grammar entered a team in the Southern Skies Tournament which was held over five days in the June/July holidays and involved international teams as well as local teams. The Girls Grammar team, which consisted of girls from Years I I and 12, placed second in their pool, and a credible fourth overall. This season produced many great results through the enthusiasm and commitment of all players and teams in both the club and aGSSSA competitions.
