Cross Country Making the dream work
At the heart of our successful Cross Country team is the fact that “running is the passion”. Mr T Booth is the supreme example of someone who has loved running all of his life. He possesses a remarkable ability to foster this within the team and to give individual attention to each girl. This thirteenth victory was dedicated to AB1. This memorable season will remain with us all forever. Camille Bianchi (12E) and Rachel Ferris (12R) Captains
This season has seen new records for Girls Grammar Cross Country. Interhouse Cross Country saw large participation rates with 846 runners, 40 teachers and one dog that came to “strut its stuff” over the two kilometre loop. Holiday training, an integral part of Grammar’s success had a new record turnout on the first day, with 42 participants. A new initiative this year, the Parent-Daughter training day on Anzac Day, gained great support and allowed parents and daughters towork together as a team. At this stage of the season we felt like a team ready to create a dream. But our dream has extended beyond the School. We have donated to the ChildhoodCancer Support Associationwhich provides accommodation for country children with leukaemia and their families. We saw true courage when we visited them at Herston for our High Five fundraiser afternoon. We were inspired to translate this knowledge into action on the cross country running track as we gained a better understanding of how fortunate we were to be healthy and fit. The whole team was on an emotional high on the day of the QGSSSA competition. We worked together to win the 13, 14, 15 and 16 years age groups and to place a close second in the 17 years age group. Girls ran to the limits of their ability, striving to “hold the line and finish hard”. We were cohesive and marvellous in a team effort that created history as this was BrisbaneGirls Grammar School’s thirteenth consecutivewin at QGSSSA Cross Country Competition.
Cricket Talent wins games, but teamwork and
The Second XI played some excellent games in DivisionOne and had some significant victories against StMargaret’s and Somerville House, as well as an unfortunate one run loss to Clayfield College. Overall the team finished in fifth place on the ladder. Captain, Belinda Templeton (11O) led with the bat and ball, sharpening her bowling pace considerably from last year. Also competing in Division One, the Third XI played a number of impressive games. Their final placing of fourthwas an exceptional effort against some very formidable opponents. They played an exciting brand of Cricket, with batting powerhouse Claire Maxwell (10R) scoring the vast majority of her 83 season runs in boundaries. The Fourth XI played in Division Twoof theQGSSSACompetitionand managed a creditable fourth place, an excellent all-round effort considering the age and experience of many of these girls at the start of
the season. Alexandra Canavan (11G) made a fine contribution with over 50 runs and five wickets. The Fifth XI improved markedly through the season to finish seventh in Division Two, with Team Captain Hannah Nicklin (10W) leading the way with the bat.
This was again seen in the 2006 season with girls competing over five disciplines, ranging from the extremely tough and physically demandingOneDay Event, a kind of horse triathlon requiring high levels of fitness from both horse and rider, to the more elegant but equally difficult Dressage and Showhorse competitions. This range of talents has been expertly polished by our equally talentedcoachingteamwho have spent many weekends instructing and comforting us before and after important rides. Overall the season has been fun for all riders and with 16 girls competing for the School in the State Championships held during the September holidays, it should be said that Grammar Equestrian remains strong. Lyndsay Thompson (12O) and Alexandra O’Connell (12M) Captains
Grammar Equestrian remains strong The start of season camp, held over the first weekend of Term I at the Gold Coast Polo and Country Club, was a weekend of fun and friendship for the girls, but the serious illness of one of the horses made the girls appreciate that this sport is not like any other and situations can change very quickly. Along with many successful interschool events, five riders were this year selected as members of the 2006 Equilibrium Queensland Junior Eventing Squad. These five girls, Zoe Saxby (9G), Belinda Templeton (11O), Madeleine Davies (11H), Alexandra O’Connell (12M) and Lyndsay Thompson (12O) are competing at the top of their sport in Queensland. Brisbane Girls Grammar School has, for a long time, been an equestrian school with riders of many talents.
dedication win premierships
Big hitting and fast fielding have characterised the 2005/06 season. The strong results of all five teams have reflected the hard work of players. The First XI played an outstanding season. In their first QGSSSA season, the team triumphed in the Open Division, finishing in outright Premiership for Girls Grammar. The First XI rose to every challenge they faced, and during the season the team amassed a total of 331 runs for the loss of just 10 wickets. Clare Martin (11W) took 10 wickets overall and Alice Nicklin (11W) batted through the entire season without losing her wicket once. first place and securing the inaugural QGSSSA Cricket
